Overview
A Tennessee special education teaching assistant (also known as a Special Education Assistant or Paraprofessional) works under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher to support students with disabilities, help implement their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Responsibilities- Student Support: Providing one-on-one or small group academic assistance to reinforce lessons and help students master concepts.
- IEP Implementation: Assisting the teacher in implementing goals and behavior plans outlined in students' IEPs.
- Behavior Management: Supervising students in various settings (classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds) and assisting with behavior modification or positive reinforcement techniques.
- Instructional Support: Preparing lesson materials, setting up classrooms, organizing supplies, and operating equipment to supplement presentations.
- Documentation and Monitoring: Observing and documenting student progress, performance, and behavior, and maintaining student records and attendance information.
- Personal Care: In settings with students with significant disabilities, duties may include assisting with personal needs such as toileting, feeding, and other self-help activities.
- Collaboration: Communicating student progress or concerns with supervising teachers, and collaborating with other school professionals (e.g., therapists, guidance staff) and families.
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. If the applicant has not completed two years of college, a general knowledge paraprofessional assessment will be administered in the district with a minimum passing score of 70 required prior to employment.
- Skills: Patience, strong communication and interpersonal skills, empathy, adaptability, and an understanding of special education practices and child development.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with IEPs, assistive technology, and classroom/behavior management systems is often expected.
- Physical Health: Good physical and emotional health, as some roles require lifting and assisting with student physical needs.
- Ethics: A commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professional ethics regarding student information.
