Substitute Clerical (Non‑Teaching)

Hours: Will vary by assignment
Location: Varies – all school locations in the Kent School District
Placement: Supervisory and clerical support at elementary schools, including play periods, recess, lunch, bus loading and cross‑walk duty. Guest staff are expected to be available on a day‑to‑day, on‑call basis, any day of the week, Monday through Friday.
Guests will assist office staff with clerical duties such as typing, filing, copying, organizing materials for distribution, and recording information. They will supervise students at the elementary level during play periods in and out of classrooms, recess, lunch supervision, bus loading and perform before and after school cross‑walk duty as needed.
Early morning phone calls may occur starting as early as 5:00 am.
Duties & Responsibilities- Provide a friendly, open, safe, and service‑orientated atmosphere in all locations worked.
- Maintain spatial awareness while promoting student safety at lunch, playground, bus loading and crosswalk supervision.
- Administer school discipline/positive reward programs within the building for the day.
- Supervise students in the lunchroom.
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing and making copies.
- Document and record student behavior as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all student and district related matters and records.
- Provide clerical assistance to other building staff, as needed.
- Must be at least 18 years of age; additional related training desirable.
- Ability to have effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public and to work with a significant diversity of individuals and groups.
- Exercise sound, independent judgment, including appropriate handling of confidential matters.
- Willingness to work in all types of weather.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written expression in English.
- Comply with all Board policies and procedures.
- Background check through Washington State Patrol, as required by RCW 43.43.830. Fees apply.
- Availability to work all hours of a student day starting as early as 7:00 am until 4:30 pm on any day of the school week.
- Ability to operate a computer, including word processing.
- Ability to operate modern office machines, including office copier and fax.
- Flexible and willing to adjust schedules on short notice.
- Evidence of promptness and reliability.
- Ability to communicate in a second language.
- Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics.
- Ability to show multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity and communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
