We are seeking a highly experienced Sr. Mechanical Engineer to investigate and resolve persistent performance issues with a precision valve used in production with a manufacturing client in Kent, WA. This is a short-term, hands-on contract role focused on diagnosing root causes, improving repeatability, and documenting sustainable solutions. The valve design has been in use for ~20 years, but recent inconsistencies have driven excessive rework and shop disruption.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review and interpret drawings, assembly methods, inspection processes, and test procedures
- Diagnose root causes across design, assembly, inspection, testing, and physics of operation
- Recommend practical design, process, or test-stand improvements to improve repeatability
- Work directly on-site with engineers and technicians, asking questions and validating assumptions
- Partner with an external manufacturer to prototype changes (8-day turnaround) and evaluate results
- Clearly document findings, decisions, and recommendations so improvements can be institutionalized and sustained
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 20+ years of hands-on mechanical engineering experience troubleshooting real hardware
- Strong background in precision mechanical systems with tight tolerances (.001” or smaller)
- Deep understanding of valves, fluids, pressure, contamination, seals (O-rings), springs, fasteners, and stack-ups
- Proven ability to translate drawings into how parts are actually built, assembled, and behave in practice
- Experience working closely with manufacturing to drive repeatable, scalable processes
- Comfortable operating independently, reporting findings, and guiding next steps
- Excellent technical documentation skills
NICE TO HAVE:
- Direct experience designing or troubleshooting valves or fluid control devices
- Background in mechanical hardware environments (e.g., industrial equipment, aerospace, robotics, or large-scale hardware teams)
- Experience with small to mid-sized assemblies (roughly bread-box size or smaller)
