The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

The Certified Nursing Assistant II provides direct healthcare support to the incarcerated population in Department of Adult Correction facilities under the supervision of nursing or other clinical staff. The position performs patient care activities within the assigned scope of practice, with an emphasis on medication administration, treatment support, clinical documentation, patient observation, and other nursing services authorized through applicable certification or training.

Key duties include:

  • Administer medications or treatments within the assigned scope of practice and in accordance with established healthcare procedures.
  • Transcribe medication or treatment orders and maintain required medication administration or treatment documentation.
  • Order, receive, store, or maintain medications and healthcare supplies according to established procedures.
  • Observe patients for medication effectiveness, side effects, changes in condition, or other clinical concerns and report relevant information to nursing staff.
  • Reinforce patient education previously provided by nurses, physicians, or other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform CNA II-level nursing or patient care procedures authorized by applicable certification, training, or assigned scope of practice.
  • Maintain accurate patient care records and communicate relevant clinical information to nursing or other healthcare staff.
  • Complete required Department of Adult Correction medication administration training and competency requirements following hire.

Temporary role: 11 months with a 31-day break; renewal opportunities available. Applicants must pass a background check to qualify.

Candidates who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience administering medications or treatments to patients in a healthcare, correctional, behavioral health, long-term care, or similar clinical setting.
  • Documented experience completing medication administration records, treatment records, patient-care notes, or similar clinical documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience observing patients for medication side effects, treatment response, changes in condition, or other clinical concerns.
  • Demonstrated experience performing CNA II-level clinical procedures such as specimen collection, catheterization, sterile dressing changes, oxygen-related procedures, or other procedures within an authorized scope of practice.
  • Proven experience following medication orders, nursing instructions, treatment protocols, or established healthcare procedures when providing direct patient care.

Location availability:
Statewide – variation of shift assignments according to facility. Availability of specific shifts will be discussed during the interview process.
