The Regional Medical Director (RMD) serves as a strategic medical leader and trusted partner to hospitals within their region. This role is responsible for supporting medical excellence, fostering collaborative hospital cultures, mentoring medical leaders, and helping practices achieve both clinical and operational success.

The RMD embraces innovation, relationship-building, and servant leadership. This position is highly collaborative and continuously evolving — success in the role is driven as much by mindset, adaptability, creativity, and emotional intelligence as by technical expertise. The RMD will have broad latitude to develop new ideas, support teams in meaningful ways, and help shape the future of medical excellence within Lakefield Veterinary Group.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Medical Leadership
  • Provide strategic medical leadership and guidance to area hospitals.
  • Help hospitals establish and advance a clear medical vision aligned with Lakefield’s values and standards of care.
  • Collaborate with hospital medical teams to ensure Lakefield hospitals are recognized as outstanding within the veterinary profession.
  • Work alongside hospital teams to identify strengths, opportunities for improvement, and pathways for continued growth.
  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure high-quality medicine and patient care are consistently delivered across the region.
  • Continually seek creative and innovative ways to improve hospital performance, culture, patient care, and team engagement.
Medical Team Support & Development
  • Meet regularly — virtually and/or in person — with Medical Directors and hospital leadership teams throughout the region.
  • Support hospitals with appropriate doctor, technician, and support staff utilization to maximize efficiency and patient care.
  • Assist in developing medical leadership training programs, medical compliance training, and medical skill development initiatives.
  • Help determine relevant educational material and topics for medical breakout sessions and regional training meetings.
  • Support mentorship, coaching, and professional development for veterinarians and medical leaders.
  • Help identify recruiting opportunities and participate in attracting and retaining top veterinary talent.
  • Demonstrate a working understanding of veterinary business operations, including workflow efficiency, patient flow, client experience, and financial awareness.
  • Serve as an active participant and contributor to the Medical Advisory Board.
  • Advocate for and help communicate medical initiatives, standards, and programs developed or approved by the Medical Advisory Board.
  • Partner closely with Operations leadership to provide medical insight, support, and problem-solving.
  • Support area hospitals in achieving annual practice objectives, goals, and strategic initiatives.
  • Foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among hospitals and teams across the region.
Industry Representation
  • Represent Lakefield Veterinary Group professionally with industry leaders, vendors, veterinary organizations, and teaching institutions.
  • Build strong relationships that support continued innovation, education, and excellence in veterinary medicine.
Culture & Engagement
  • Assess and support a culture of continuous learning, psychological safety, and teamwork
  • Serve as a role model for clinical excellence, professionalism, and compassionate care
  • Find meaningful ways to recognize, celebrate, and support hospital teams and their accomplishments.
  • Lead with empathy, accountability, and commitment to servant leadership.
Qualifications
  • DVM or equivalent veterinary degree required.
  • Active veterinary license in good standing; ability to obtain licensure in applicable states as needed.
  • Minium of five years' experience in clinical veterinary practice.
