Job Description

The NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions (CNCS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to support and improve workflows for monitoring and reporting of biodiversity using new technologies. The role involves fieldwork, labwork and data analyses to contribute to new standards in biodiversity monitoring and reporting for conservation and sustainability reporting. The appointment is for an initial period of one year with the possibility of renewal.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct literature reviews, data collection and analysis.
  • Organise and coordinate a team to perform fieldwork sessions.
  • Survey and report biodiversity in terrestrial forest habitats using methods such as Malaise trapping for flying insects, passive bioacoustics monitoring, eDNA sampling from soil and leaf litter.
  • Contribute to the creation of workflows for biodiversity monitoring, supporting conservation and sustainability reporting objectives.
  • Assist in documenting workflows, data analyses and report preparation for biodiversity assessments.
  • Assist in preparation and publication of manuscripts and reports.
  • Assist with general administrative tasks such as procurement and safety reporting.
  • Support other related duties and responsibilities as required to support the team and the Centre.
Qualifications / Discipline
  • Master’s degree (Life Sciences, Environmental Studies, or related field preferred).
Skills
  • Interest in pioneering/improving methods for carbon monitoring and reporting.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, self‑motivated, able to work independently as well as in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with identifying common insect orders and families, identifying bird, insect, frog calls would be advantageous.
  • Proficiency in R, Python or other platforms for data analysis.
Experience
  • At least 2 years’ relevant work experience, and good knowledge, skills and expertise in relevant field.
  • Experience and comfort working for long hours in tropical forest environments.
  • Wet lab work (DNA barcoding, metabarcoding, experience with ONT minION platform preferred).
  • Running bioacoustics analyses would be advantageous.
