Position Summary

Middle school assistant coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole‑child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships.

Eligibility

Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching positions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • General:
    • Professional Development and Leadership – keep abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with your sport.
    • Rules and Regulations – study and understand the rules and regulations of WIAA, Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which your team competes.
    • Program Promotion – promote your sport within the school and encourage student participation.
    • Program Organization – hold practice daily; must be cleared in advance by the building athletic director for illness or emergency.
    • Standard of Care – model safety training and have a working knowledge of basic athletic training skills.
    • Professionalism – exercise good judgment, model positive coaching behaviors, and teach basic skills fundamentals and leadership characteristics.
    • Sportsmanship and Ethics – serve as an example of sportsmanship and humility at all times.
  • Administrative:
    • Supervision – responsible for participants from reporting until leaving.
    • Presentation of Rules/Regulations – reinforce eligibility requirements and participation rules.
    • Accident/Injury Procedure – call 911 for serious injuries and submit an Accident Report Form within 24 hours.
    • Meeting Attendance – attend building, district, and league meetings.
    • Facility and Equipment – report safety concerns promptly and care for equipment and facilities.
    • Violations and Ejections – report infractions immediately after the contest.
    • Coach Evaluation – attend an evaluation meeting following the season.
    • Program Leadership – meet with the head coach to develop program goals before the season.
  • Financial and Equipment:
    • Responsibility for Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory – account for all items checked out.
    • Program Purchases – request essential needs through the head coach; do not purchase with personal funds.
    • Fundraising Activities – discuss potential fundraising with the head coach; do not raise or handle funds without advance approval.
  • Other Responsibilities – perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of sport‑specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post‑secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience.
  • Proven training and experience in the presentation of drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills.
  • Work‑scheduled hours on a consistent basis.
  • 21 years of age or older.
  • Criminal background clearance.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (hands‑on training).
  • Online Concussion Training (free course at ).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years of paid middle school and/or post‑secondary sport‑specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience.
  • Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course (including passing the test).
Knowledge Of
  • League and WIAA rules and regulations.
  • National Federation of Middle Schools (NFHS) sport‑specific rules and regulations.
  • Record keeping and report preparation.
  • School board policies and procedures.
Ability To
  • Organize, administrate, and oversee a sport‑specific athletics program at each level.
  • Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently.
  • Communicate effectively in written and verbal forms.
  • Practice effective safety and security within work routines.
  • Develop and maintain positive customer relations with staff and service providers.
  • Work collaboratively with district staff and promote teamwork with co‑workers.
  • Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including confidentiality.
  • Relate effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community.
