Position Summary

The Cost Accounting Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the accuracy and integrity of all inventory-related accounting transactions. This position indirectly supervises and partners with supply chain to maintain accurate inventory records, ensures timely recording of inventory movements, and supports month-end close activities. The role is instrumental in strengthening internal controls, improving transaction processes, and supporting financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.

Inventory Transaction Oversight
  • Supervises daily processing and review of inventory transactions including receipts, transfers, adjustments, production completions, and shipments.
  • Ensure inventory transactions are accurately recorded within the ERP system.
  • Monitors inventory movement activity and investigates unusual transactions or variances.
  • Maintains integrity of inventory subledgers and related general ledger accounts.
  • Lead month-end and year-end inventory close activities.
  • Review and approve inventory-related journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Analyze inventory reserves, obsolescence, shrinkage, and adjustments.
  • Support internal or external audit requests and inventory testing procedures.
Inventory Controls & Compliance
  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls over inventory transactions.
  • Coordinate cycle count programs and physical inventories.
  • Review count results and ensure timely resolution of discrepancies.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and audit requirements.
Variance Analysis
  • Reviews inventory adjustment activity and identify root causes of discrepancies.
  • Analyze manufacturing, warehouse, and transaction variances.
  • Prepare management reports highlighting inventory trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Recommend corrective actions to improve inventory accuracy and transaction processing.
Process Improvement
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to inventory accounting and transaction processing.
  • Collaborate with operations, purchasing, production, and IT teams to improve business processes.
  • Assist with ERP enhancements, testing, and implementation of inventory-related system improvements.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise, train, and mentor supply chain staff responsible for inventory.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and training materials.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred.
Experience
  • 5+ years of accounting experience with emphasis on inventory or cost accounting.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Manufacturing environment experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems (JD Edwards, SAP, Oracle, or similar).
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Thorough understanding of inventory accounting principles and controls.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including Pivot Tables, Power Query, and data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with accounting and operations personnel.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.

  • Inventory accuracy percentage.
  • Cycle count completion and variance resolution.
  • Timeliness of month-end close.
  • Inventory adjustment trends.
  • Reconciliation completion and audit results.
Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office-based work environment (must be able to work in-person and on-site 60% - 100% of the time)
  • Occasional visits to manufacturing and warehouse facilities.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
