Job Description Assistant Controller
** Dallas-Fort Worth, TX | Full-Time
** About the Company  The Intersect Group is partnering with a well-established real estate organization specializing in multifamily property ownership, management, and affordable housing development. The company manages a diverse portfolio of market-rate and affordable housing communities and is committed to creating high-quality housing solutions while maintaining strong financial stewardship and regulatory compliance. With continued growth across its portfolio, the organization offers a collaborative environment where accounting professionals can make a meaningful impact on both operations and long-term business success.

Role Summary  We are seeking an Assistant Controller to support the accounting and financial reporting function across a growing multifamily real estate portfolio. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in a dynamic environment and enjoys balancing technical accounting responsibilities with team leadership and process improvement.
Working closely with senior accounting leadership, the Assistant Controller will play a critical role in month-end close activities, financial reporting, lender and investor compliance reporting, audit support, and portfolio accounting oversight. This individual will also lead and develop a team of accounting professionals while helping ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial operations across multiple entities and properties.

Key Responsibilities
* Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
* Prepare and review general ledger reconciliations, investigate variances, and ensure timely resolution of discrepancies.
* Review property-level financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and compliance prior to distribution.
* Support lender, investor, and regulatory reporting requirements, including documentation related to affordable housing funding programs.
* Prepare and coordinate audit support schedules, PBC requests, and financial documentation for external auditors and stakeholders.
* Assist with accounting setup and financial integration activities related to property acquisitions, financings, and refinancings.
* Collaborate with property management and operational teams to resolve accounting issues and ensure adherence to accounting policies and procedures.
* Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of senior and staff accountants, including workload management, performance feedback, training, and professional development.
* Support process improvement initiatives designed to strengthen internal controls, reporting efficiency, and accounting accuracy.

Key Requirements
* 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within real estate, multifamily property management, or affordable housing organizations.
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA designation or active CPA candidacy strongly preferred.
* Strong experience with month-end close, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
* Experience supporting lender reporting, investor reporting, audits, and compliance-related financial documentation.
* Knowledge of multifamily real estate accounting and property-level financial reporting.
* Experience with affordable housing programs such as HUD, CDBG, LIHTC, or other government-funded housing initiatives is highly preferred.
* Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with property management or accounting platforms such as Yardi, MRI, or similar systems.
* Prior experience managing and developing accounting staff, including performance management and workflow oversight.
* Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple entities, priorities, and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications
* CPA certification or progress toward CPA licensure.
* Experience working within affordable housing, mixed-use, or multifamily real estate portfolios.
* Exposure to acquisition accounting, refinancing transactions, and property onboarding processes.
* Experience implementing process improvements and strengthening accounting controls within a growing organization.
