Technical Services Specialist, Morrill Memorial Library (Norwood)
Status: FLSA Non-Exempt, Library Union, 35 hours per week including some nights and Saturdays.
General
Summary:
The purpose of this position is to perform responsible administrative and technical work in coordinating library materials acquisition and control including ordering, processing, entering holdings in the library’s online database, mending; and all other related work as required. The Senior Staff Assistant:
Technical Services Specialist is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under their direction and control.
- Acquires print and non-print materials from vendors, including continuation accounts. Uses automated network acquisition software or other methods as required. Obtains bibliographic records for materials using appropriate databases. Monitors status of orders and informs ordering librarians as required.
- Receives all department materials. Manages continuation accounts by tracking item order schedules, monitoring cost information, and resolving problems. Verifies orders and bills upon receipt. Inspects materials for damage, returning defective or incorrect items as necessary. Reports discrepancies to vendors and invoices all materials using acquisitions modules.
- Processes print and non-print materials for public use: attaches all materials to proper database records, checks label information for accuracy, notes items that have requests, and transfers materials to the proper location in the library.
- Manages serial and subscription-based collections, including acquisition, claiming, maintenance and withdrawal. May select and purchase materials for portions of the collection.
- Assists in planning, implementing, using, and evaluating pre-processing services and related communication with vendors of library materials.
- Assists in maintaining database quality by performing cleanup activities. Generates and manipulates network reports for use in collection development, weeding, and to prepare lists of acquisitions and collection statistics. Prepares lists of current and forthcoming acquisitions for public use online and in print. Assists in the physical processing of library material including labeling, mending, packaging, and replacing parts.
- Monitors and orders required supplies. Trains other assistants and volunteers in the technical services department and elsewhere in the library as needed.
- Charges and discharges materials and responds to patron requests when assigned to public service work.
- Assists with creation and organization of displays, and with library programs as needed.
- Contributes to regular departmental reports.
- Pursues opportunities for professional development. Maintains current knowledge of the field through attendance at conferences, seminars, etc.
- Works in other library departments as needed.
- Participates in library and town teams, committees, and trainings. Attends network and regional committees and workshops relating to current and future types of services and resources.
- Regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace is required. Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
- Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree; one year of experience in library operations including automated technology; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities of this job.
- Ability to be certified and work as a Notary Public and US Passport Acceptance Agent.
- Fluency in languages other than English is highly desirable (particularly Spanish, Indian languages, and Portuguese).
