About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Professionals prepare examples, write expert responses, and review model outputs so AI systems can reason more accurately and responsibly. This role applies real disability insurance expertise to challenging claims and underwriting scenarios.

  • Help shape how frontier AI models understand insurance reasoning
  • Use professional judgment to assess evidence and model-generated decisions
  • Work remotely with flexible contractor scheduling
The Role

Open Train is seeking a Disability Claims and Underwriting AI Training Specialist to train AI models on insurance reasoning data. You will create realistic disability adjudication and risk-selection scenarios, produce professional claim work products, and evaluate AI responses against established industry standards.

The work covers disability definitions, medical and vocational evidence, benefit entitlement, calculation accuracy, administrative records, and procedural fairness. You must distinguish claim adjudication from treating-provider clinical decisions and formal legal advice.

  • Role type:
    Remote part-time contractor
  • Minimum commitment: 20 hours per week
  • Preferred availability: 40 or more hours per week
  • Compensation after onboarding: $80 per hour
  • Paid onboarding: $800 flat rate, estimated at approximately 10 hours
What You’ll Do

You will create expert-quality training examples and provide written feedback that improves model behavior. Your work should reflect balanced judgment, accurate calculations, defensible reasoning, and careful documentation of the relevant administrative record.

  • Design short-term and long-term disability claim scenarios
  • Address elimination periods, own-occupation and any-occupation definitions, residual and partial disability, offsets, recurrent disability, and claim duration management
  • Create claim determinations, benefit calculations, medical and vocational evidence summaries, and transferable-skills analyses
  • Develop return-to-work plans and appeal decisions
  • Write experienced-professional reference responses
  • Evaluate AI-generated responses for evidentiary support, calculation accuracy, and procedural fairness
  • Identify misapplied definitions, unsupported functional conclusions, missed offsets, incorrect benefit math, and incomplete administrative records
  • Provide written feedback to improve AI model responses
Required Qualifications

You need at least two years of professional experience in disability claims adjudication, disability underwriting, vocational rehabilitation, or leave and absence management. Strong written analysis and close attention to detail are essential.

  • Experience with group short-term disability, group long-term disability, individual disability income, statutory disability, or life waiver of premium programs
  • Understanding of disability definitions, elimination periods, offsets, pre-existing-condition provisions, and maximum benefit periods
  • Ability to weigh medical, occupational, and financial evidence
  • Ability to produce defensible claim determinations with documented rationale
  • Experience creating or reviewing benefit calculations, return-to-work plans, appeal decisions, or comparable disability claim work products
  • Ability to assess AI-generated responses for evidentiary support, calculation accuracy, and procedural fairness
  • Ability to distinguish claim adjudication from clinical decisions and formal legal advice
Helpful Background

Relevant credentials and additional experience can strengthen your fit for this specialist AI training work.

  • CRC, CDMS, CCM, CPDM, RN, or a comparable clinical or vocational credential
  • Experience with ERISA administrative records
  • Appeals or litigation support experience
  • Individual disability income underwriting
  • Occupation-class or financial underwriting
  • Offset coordination
  • FMLA, state leave programs, or ADA accommodation interaction
