Child Care Substitute Teacher

We’re on the lookout for substitute teachers to fill temporary vacancies in licensed child care centers across Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, and Petersburg. Substitutes primarily work with infants through Pre-K, with some opportunities to support school-aged children. This role offers flexibility and the opportunity to work on your own terms—perfect for those seeking a part-time gig, extra income, or a stepping stone into the child care industry!

As a substitute teacher, you’ll gain hands‑on experience in a licensed child care setting, plus enjoy free professional development, including training and certification in First Aid/CPR.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engage and supervise children to ensure their safety and well-being, creating a fun and inclusive environment that fosters growth and learning.
• Collaborate with teachers to design and lead activities, games, and learning experiences that cater to diverse age groups and abilities.
• Support classroom routines and daily operations, working closely with teachers to maintain a smooth and efficient learning environment.

Required Qualifications:

• Pass a fingerprint-based background check and child abuse registry clearance
• Pass a TB screening
• High school diploma or equivalent (higher pay rate available for those with a Child Development Associate credential or higher education)

The following trainings are required prior to accepting your first substitute job, but Child Care Aware of Virginia will provide training and cover any associated costs:

• Virginia pre-service orientation training
• First Aid & CPR certification

$16.00 – $18.00 / hour

VA Sub Hub substitutes have access to benefits and financial incentives designed to support you as you get started and continue working in the program.
