This is a paid $1,000 story-mapping engagement — not a full edit — to review the footage and produce a clear edit plan before any larger commitment.

This is the pilot episode of Elsewhere, an ongoing documentary series () built around a voiceover-driven, personal-essay format — place as character, not backdrop. This first episode follows 27 days I spent traveling through China with my daughter Sophie. I've cut a 25-minute rough draft and have several hours of additional footage. I know what the film is about — I'm looking for an editor who can help me build it to the standard the series needs, not discover it from scratch.

The emotional spine: we went to China hoping to find an unfamiliar country. Over 27 days, China became familiar — and I realized Sophie was no longer only my daughter, but also my friend. I watched her growing independence, my own aging, and a future in which she travels without me. The central question the film is asking:how does a father stay close to his daughter while accepting that she's becoming someone who will leave him?

Elsewherewill expand into other formats (see the Show section at  ). This first episode has to hold as close as it can to that overall ambition without faking it — meaning the craft, restraint, and emotional honesty here set the bar for what follows. I'd rather under-deliver on scope than fake a polish the material doesn't have.

For $1,000, the scope is:

• Review the current rough cut and a curated selection of additional footage against the spine above
• One focused story session with me to pressure-test structure
• A concise story/edit map: what stays, what gets restructured or cut, and where voiceover or archival material would strengthen the through-line

This phase does not include a full raw-footage review or a finished edit. If it's a strong creative and format fit, we'll scope the ongoing

What I'm looking for, in priority order:

• Producing-editor judgment — can take a known emotional spine and shape footage around it, not just assemble scenes
• Documentary editing experience — character-led, observational, or travel/cultural work
• Format sensitivity — can hold a voiceover-driven, personal-essay tone without letting it slide into travelogue or sentimentality
• Character sensitivity — understands a father-daughter story without turning Sophie into a device
• Strong interviewing/listening skills — can draw out additional reflections from us when useful
• Hands-on Final Cut Pro competence — ideas should become cuts, not just notes
• Archival/visual research sense — knows how maps, photos, and historical material can deepen thin footage
• Restraint — won't bury the real journey under narration, stock footage, effects, or AI
• Constructive candor — will tell me directly what's weak, repetitive, or unusable
• Availability — can work consistently enough to move this forward now

Your story-mapping stage caught my attention. My background is in screenwriting, story development, script editing, and narrative feedback, so I’m particularly interested in the storytelling side of the project.

I’d be interested in helping you pressure-test the structure, emotional arc, pacing, and overall story direction before the larger edit. I want to be transparent that my strength is the story-development side rather than hands-on Final Cut Pro editing.
