The North End Music & Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) is seeking a director for the Strings Ensemble Program for the NEMPAC/ South End Village Academy Partnership for the  school year, from September 9, 2026 - June 12, 2026. The director should love working with students ages 6 - 7. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, organized, and is excellent at communication with both families and administration.

Description:

The North End Music & Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) is seeking a director for the Strings Ensemble Program for the NEMPAC/ South End Village Academy Partnership for the  school year, from September 9, 2026 - June 12, 2026. The director should love working with students ages 6 - 7. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, organized, and is excellent at communication with both families and administration.

Teaching day(s):

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, plus 2 performances, one in December and one in the Spring, TBD.

The director will oversee and direct this after-school beginner-level strings ensemble, for students in grades 1 - 3 (violin, viola, cello).

The director will be on site for both days, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They will lead the full ensemble rehearsals and class instruction alongside two teaching artists. The director is responsible for managing the other two sectional teaching artists, the administrative oversight of scheduling and rehearsals, the rental program, and performances.

The ensemble will have two performance opportunities throughout the year, such as a December holiday concert, and an end of the year concert. The program is located a 15 minute walk away from the orange line in the South End of Boston (1310 Washington St). Parking is not provided.

Teaching

Responsibilities Include:
  • Teach engaging whole ensemble rehearsals.
  • Manage an ensemble of up to 30 students in grades 1 - 2.
  • Choose all repertoire for the Strings Ensemble
  • Manage and oversee two other teaching artists, ensuring consistency and quality in instruction.
  • Oversight of the rental program, ensuring smooth communication between families and the rental site.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding at home practice, progress, reminders etc.
  • Set up and clean up rehearsal space each week, ensuring equipment, instruments, and music materials are prepped and bought as needed.
  • Take attendance in each rehearsal and sign students out with their authorized guardians.
  • Prepare the ensemble for two performance opportunities throughout the year - December Spring TBD.
Compensation:
  • $65/hr for teaching/rehearsals plus a $1500 stipend for administrative work.

Qualifications:

Comfortable working with students in grades 1 - 2.

Experience leading and conducting youth bands, ensembles, and/or orchestras

At least two years of teaching or directing experience, particularly in ensemble settings, and be committed to promoting the growth of the strings ensemble program.

Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

An undergraduate degree in Music Performance or Education preferred, or relevant experience.
