POSITION SUMMARY
The Stage Director provides the primary artistic and instructional leadership for the Shrewsbury Borough School Drama Club production. Working collaboratively with the Drama Club Advisor and Assistant Stage Director, the Stage Director develops and implements the artistic vision for the production and leads students through auditions, rehearsals, staging, and performances while fostering creativity, confidence, collaboration, and growth in theater skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Provide the primary artistic direction for the Drama Club production and lead students toward a cohesive, high-quality, educational performance.
- Collaborate with the Drama Club Advisor and administration in selecting an age-appropriate, engaging production suitable for the school setting and student participants.
- Plan, organize, and facilitate auditions and callbacks and participate in a fair, inclusive, and student-centered casting process.
- Develop and implement rehearsal plans, production timelines, blocking, character development, stage movement, and other performance elements.
- Direct rehearsals and coach students in acting, characterization, stage presence, movement, projection, ensemble work, and other performance skills appropriate to the production.
- Collaborate closely with the Assistant Stage Director and delegate production and rehearsal responsibilities as appropriate.
- Coordinate artistic elements with technical and production needs, including scenery, props, costumes, lighting, sound, music, choreography, and stage crew, as applicable.
- Communicate rehearsal objectives, expectations, and production needs clearly to students, staff, volunteers, and the Drama Club Advisor.
- Attend and provide leadership for auditions, scheduled rehearsals, technical/dress rehearsals, and performances.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, supportive, and positive rehearsal environment that encourages student participation, creativity, responsibility, teamwork, and confidence.
- Work with the Drama Club Advisor to address student supervision, attendance, scheduling, family communication, facilities, and other program logistics.
- Ensure that the artistic and instructional elements of the production are appropriate for middle school students and consistent with district expectations.
- Perform other production-related responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent/Principal or designee.
- Experience directing or participating in theater productions strongly preferred.
- Experience working with middle school students preferred.
- Knowledge of acting, directing, blocking, character development, stage movement, and theatrical production.
- Strong leadership, organization, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Ability to motivate and guide students while maintaining high expectations within a positive and supportive environment.
- Commitment to student-centered arts education and meaningful performance opportunities for students.
- Must satisfy all Shrewsbury Borough School District employment, background-check, and certification requirements applicable to the position.
