Interim​/Traditional Worship Accompanist; Organ & Piano

OVERVIEW

New Providence Presbyterian Church (NPPC) is seeking a skilled and relationally gifted organist/pianist to provide accompaniment for NPPC's traditional worship services and choir rehearsals (handbell rehearsals on occasion), in close collaboration with our Traditional Worship Director. This role helps guide the congregation in glorifying God through music, enabling us to pursue our mission to Know, Love, and Follow Jesus and to Share Him with others.

NOTE: NPPC is open to filling this position as an interim or permanent position based on candidate availability. We are also open to this role combining with the Traditional Worship Director (Choir & Handbells) position for a candidate with experience and interest in both areas.

This position reports directly to the Traditional Worship Director. If that role is unfilled, it would report on an interim basis to the Senior Pastor / Head of Staff.

This is a part-time, non-exempt, hourly position. Hourly pay is $25–$35/hour, based on experience. This position is estimated at approximately 6–10 hours total/week, including Sunday service accompaniment, Thursday choir rehearsal accompaniment, and Wednesday handbell rehearsal accompaniment as needed. Individual practice time is expected in addition to these hours. Availability for Sunday traditional worship services, Christmas Eve, Easter, and other special worship services is required.

If a candidate is placed on an interim basis, the role is intended to bridge the traditional worship ministry through the conclusion of NPPC's broader worship staffing search, targeted for completion in Q1 2027; NPPC will also consider qualified candidates for this role on a permanent basis.

This position is not eligible for health, dental, or life insurance, or paid time off. As a part-time position, it is eligible to participate in NPPC's retirement plan (non-matching).

• Faith Commitment: A personal relationship with Christ and a passion to honor and glorify God through worship and music are preferred. We welcome candidates who share NPPC's core beliefs and are open to living in alignment with our denomination's (ECO) Essential Tenets and NPPC's Statement of Faith and lifestyle expectations, though this is preferred rather than required for this role. We're happy to discuss further during the interview process.
• Proven proficiency in organ and piano performance in a worship or comparable liturgical setting.
• Skilled in accompanying a mix of new, current, traditional and classical worship music, hymns, and choral literature.
• Strong sight-reading ability.
• Comfortable accompanying choir, soloists, and congregational singing.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with a strong service orientation and ability to work collaboratively with the Traditional Worship Director, pastoral staff, and volunteers.
• Reliable and consistent, committed to adequate individual practice to perform with excellence.
• Familiarity with Planning Center, or willingness to be trained.
• Educational background:
  Associate’s degree in music or equivalent experience as a church organist/pianist preferred.
• Experience working in a not-for-profit or church setting is highly desirable.

• Play organ and/or piano for Sunday traditional worship services and pre-service rehearsals.
• Accompany weekly choir rehearsal (Thursday evenings) and handbell rehearsal (Wednesday evenings), as needed.
• Spend adequate time practicing organ and piano repertoire to perform with excellence.
• Provide accompaniment for special services (e.g., Christmas Eve, Easter) and church-wide events, as needed.

• Collaborate with the Traditional Worship Director on hymn, song, and anthem selection, providing input on instrumental feasibility and arrangement.

• Monitor the condition of the organ and pianos and report maintenance needs to the Traditional Worship Director in a timely manner.
