Independently provides a range of duties to support The Commuter, LBCC's award-winning student publication, including the monthly print magazine, the LB Commuter website, and The Commuter's social media, advertising, marketing, and publishing operations.

  • Based on their interests, students can work in a variety of roles at The Commuter, including but not limited to: reporting, writing and editing; photography and graphic arts and design; social media and website editing; marketing, advertising and promotions; and circulation and delivery. In these roles, Commuter staffers can work 10-15 hours per week, depending on their work-study funding.

The editors and other department heads are responsible for working with work-study students and delegating assignments and work duties, which can vary depending on the role at the publication. For example, a reporting or photography student could be assigned to attend a campus event and then produce a written account of the event, along with photos of what happened.

Subsequently, editors would work with the reporter/photographer to edit their work, provide feedback, and prepare it for publication on The Commuter's website or in the monthly magazine. Likewise, a student assigned to the marketing director could be tasked with creating promotional materials for a student club on campus or work with an advertising client seeking to buy advertising space in The Commuter.

Or students could produce social media posts or be assigned to edit and post content on the website,

  • At the direction of the editors and department heads, work-study students would be expected to meet all applicable deadlines for their assigned tasks (e.g. advertising deadlines, news/photo publication deadlines).
  • Work-study students are invited to become full participants in the operations of The Commuter, in whatever role they choose, along with contributing to an efficient and collegial work environment.
