Dia Chelsea is an art museum in the Chelseaneighborhood ofNew York. Opened in 1987 at 548 West 22nd Street as Dia Center for the Arts, the museum has since moved across the street to a series of connected buildings now consolidated at 537 West 22nd Street as Dia Chelsea. It is one of 12 thelocations and sites Dia Art Foundation manages.

The museum hosts long-term exhibitions dedicated to one or two artists at a time as well as associated public programs.

Position summary

Dia Chelsea seeks a Part-time Gallery Attendant with flexible availability, including on weekends, occasional evenings, and most holidays. This is a year-round position;
Dia Chelsea is open Wednesday
- Saturday, 12-6 pm, but work hours fluctuate based on exhibition and program needs.

The Part-time Gallery Attendant is responsible for providing a positive, professional, and safe environment for Dia Chelsea visitors. Rotating between the welcome desk, shop, and galleries, they help facilitate the visitors’ experience within a unique, artist-focused space. The individual in this role ensures adherence to gallery policies as necessary to assist visitors and protect the collection, and will be trained extensively on Dia Art Foundation’s history, mission, and sites.

The position requires an aptitude for visitor engagement and enthusiasm for teamwork, as well as comfort with walking and standing for the majority of the workday. The ideal candidate demonstrates superb customer-service and communication skills in a team setting; has the ability to work independently and be self-motivated; and operates effectively within a changing environment.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Provide superior customer service, including welcoming visitors, responding to their inquiries, and promoting memberships and public programs
  • Cultivate a welcoming and engaging shop environment and support daily retail operations, including opening and closing procedures, operating point-of-sale system, assisting the sales of books and merchandise, maintaining an organized shop presentation, staying informed about current offerings, and providing accurate, thoughtful recommendations; assist with external shop events as needed
  • Maintain the appearance of the lobby and galleries by monitoring spaces, replenishing information materials, and coordinating or performing light maintenance during public hours
  • Engage proactively and thoughtfully with visitors, answering questions and providing helpful information; assist and guide as necessary
  • Communicate effectively about the works on view as well as Dia’s history, mission, and sites and the surrounding Chelsea neighborhood as needed
  • Monitor interactions and professionally communicate museum policies and procedures as necessary to assist visitors and protect the artwork; assist visitors with disabilities and/or special needs; help with crowd management when necessary
  • Monitor compliance with all safety regulations and demonstrate an ability to assist in case of an emergency; attend ongoing trainings for health and safety, emergency action, and other protocols as required
  • Monitor the condition of the art and building, informing Senior Gallery Attendants of possible problems, damages, and changes
  • Collaborate closely with Visitor Experience colleagues and cross-functional teams to ensure a seamless and welcoming experience, including assistance with special events, public programs, tours and VIP visits, and cross-site support as needed
  • Demonstrate sound judgement and problem-solving skills, addressing visitor concerns and operational challenges in a calm, professional, and solution-oriented manner
