Primary Function

The Expanded Duty Dental Assistant (EDDA) assists dentists in providing efficient and effective care and treatment of patients. The EDDA is responsible for preparing the operatory for procedures, arranging patient trays, escorting patients to the operatory, and supporting the dentist throughout each clinical procedure. The EDDA ensures the operatory is stocked, processes equipment through cleaning and sterilization steps, organizes patient flow for optimum efficiency, and cleans and sterilizes the operatory after patient procedures.

The EDDA works as part of an integrated care team to deliver high‑quality coordinated care.

Principal Duties
  • Follow guidelines for patient workflow and monitor schedule for quick patient care.
  • Complete all steps necessary to prepare the operatory and patient room before the dentist sees the patient, including collecting health history, updating patient chart, reviewing chart notes, and verifying the reason for visit.
  • Assist the dentist throughout the patient visit, working under the dentist’s direction to perform chairside assisting, 4‑handed dentistry, and other direct patient care tasks. Obtain radiographic images and load into the EDR system. Deliver preventive education to patients.
  • Conduct expanded functions as directed by the dentist.
  • Complete paperwork associated with patient care, such as lab cases and pre‑authorization requests, as directed by the dentist and/or supervisor.
  • Determine and schedule follow‑up appointments as required, explain post‑treatment instructions to patients, and escort patients to the check‑out desk to finalize the visit.
  • Carry out all necessary procedures for maintaining proper operatory and equipment maintenance.
  • Use downtime to complete activities that support efficient departmental operation.
  • Support hygienists in achieving departmental efficiency and team goals.
  • Perform related work and other duties or tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements

Minimum Education: High School Diploma and Certificate of Expanded Dental Assistant Functions

Minimum

Work Experience:

Minimum one year dental assisting experience preferred.

Required License: n/a

Qualifications

Successful applicants will be mature, well‑organized, possess a pleasant personality and speaking voice, and be proficient in professional appearance and friendly demeanor. Knowledge of dental office procedures, basic computer skills, and scheduling is required. The position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with co‑workers as a team member.

Salary

$15.04 – $23.68 per hour, based on experience.

Work Hours

37.5 hours (Irregular work hours, some overtime possible at times.)
