Baystate Health is a not-for-profit, integrated healthcare system in western Massachusetts, consisting of an academic medical center, three community hospitals, and the region’s largest multispecialty group. Our flagship hospital, Baystate Medical Center, is home to the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School-Baystate.

We are seeking a full-time Internal Medicine physician to join our employed physician team at our Community Health Adult Medicine practice as the Ambulatory Assistant Program Director of our Internal Medicine Residency Program and as a primary care clinician.

Position Highlights

Ambulatory Assistant Program Director Responsibilities
  • Participate in intern orientation, program retreats, and annual program reviews.
  • Serve on the Clinical Competency Committee and attend regular Program Director meetings.
  • Contribute to program self-study, ACGME accreditation processes, and site visits.
  • Support faculty development initiatives, particularly in outpatient education.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, including participation in regional and national conferences (e.g., APDIM).
Recruitment
  • Review ERAS applications and participate in applicant interviews.
  • Provide program overviews and represent the residency program to prospective candidates.
  • Contribute to rank order list discussions and final selection decisions.
Resident Mentorship, Advising & Coaching
  • Mentor and advise a cohort of residents across all levels of training through structured and ad hoc meetings.
  • Complete milestone evaluations and provide ongoing formative feedback.
  • Develop individualized learning or remediation plans as needed.
  • Support resident wellness initiatives and participate in faculty-resident evaluation discussions.
  • Contribute to the selection and mentorship of Chief Residents.
Curriculum Development & Education
  • Lead and develop key components of the ambulatory curriculum (e.g., Academic Half Day, electives, or longitudinal tracks).
  • Actively participate in core educational activities, including didactics, Journal Club, and Ambulatory Morning Report.
Primary Care Delivery Responsibilities
  • Join a dedicated team of physicians and advanced practitioners delivering innovative, compassionate, and comprehensive outpatient care to an underserved, inner-city population.
  • Provide care for patients with complex medical and social needs, with opportunities for meaningful community engagement.

Compensation:
The compensation ranges below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate’s relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range.

Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full-time commitment for exempt employees.

Salary Range: $232,500-$280,000

Qualifications

Candidates must be Board Certified in Internal Medicine. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional clinical, teaching, and communication skills, with a strong commitment to working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and caring for underserved populations. At least three years of experience in resident education is required, preferably as a resident preceptor in a primary care setting. Experience in leadership roles and in curriculum development is also preferred.
