This Physician Assistant will work in Plastic and Oral Surgery in the summer months and the Emergency Department during the winter months.
Plastic Surgery and Oral SurgeryKey Responsibilities:
- Administer IV conscious sedation, including IV placement, peri-, intra-and post-procedural assessment and monitoring of patients undergoing IV sedation in the office-based setting
- Provide comprehensive healthcare services to patients of all ages and with all types of conditions
- Elicit histories, perform examinations, order and interpret diagnostic studies, instruct and counsel patients about their diagnosis
- Provide all aspects of pre-operative and post-operative care, as well as first or second assisting during surgery
- Facilitate the appropriate referral of patients, consistent with his or her supervising physician's scope of expertise and responsibility and delegated to him/her by the supervising physician
- 40 hours per week, four 10-hour days Monday through Friday in Boston and Waltham as well as the possibility of travelling to other satellite locations as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Managing patients at all acuity levels and across all ages with medical and/or surgical complaints who are boarding in the Emergency Department awaiting admission to the hospital.
- Perform reassessments and continue to progress a wide range of care plans using sound clinical reasoning and critical thinking.
- Engage in communication with consultations in subspecialty services to aid in patient care. Engage in sign-out communication with floor team upon ability to transfer.
- Communicate with patients and families in a respectful manner leading to compassionate and empathetic care. Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health issues. Work to promote and encourage optimal and realistic patient goals.
- Work in collaboration with board certified pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians, PEM fellows, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, emergency medicine and pediatrics residents.
- 39.5 hours per week, four daytime shifts rotating Monday through Saturday in Boston. Will need to work 2 Saturday shifts per month, the remainder of shifts will be Monday-Friday. Weekday shifts are 9-hour shifts from 7a-4p. Weekend shifts are 10-hour shifts from 7a-5p. 3 hours of administrative time will be added per week. Will need to work one winter holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas).
Education:
- Masters degree in physician assistant studies
- Experience as a PA preferred
- An interest in inpatient medicine
- Rotations in plastics/OR preferred
- If new grad PA previous experience as an EMT, Paramedic or Combat Medic strongly preferred
- Experience in Sedation (nitrous, conscious sedation with versed and fentanyl) experience preferred
Certifications:
- A current MA PA license required
- PALS and BLS once employed
