POSITION SUMMARY

Plans, directs, and performs advanced nursing practice and delegated medical acts, including the prescription of medications in collaboration with physician. Formulate, initiate, and monitor the total general patient management plan for inmates housed in the Spartanburg County Detention Facility. Reports to the Medical Administrator, Medical Director, and Detention Facility Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Communicates and interacts with supervisor(s), co-workers, inmates, law enforcement officers,physicians, hospitals, etc. Interviews patients, documents their medical history and makes assessments and/or physical diagnosis of condition. Conducts complete physical examinations and diagnosis work-up on patients with targeted physical exams when appropriate for isolated complaints, exercises sound nursing judgment in initiating and prescribing therapy within the guidelines of written protocols. Orders routine and diagnostic labs and diagnostic studies according to established criteria when such studies are deemed appropriate for completing diagnosis and monitoring therapy.

Diagnose and treat acute illnesses, infections, and injuries. Diagnose, treat, and monitor chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure). Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic studies (e.g., lab tests, x-rays, EKGs). Formulates, initiates, monitors, and adjusts patient management plans for inmates requiring medical attention. This is based on established standards of care in consultation with a licensed physician. Prescribe and/or adjusts medications and other therapeutic regimens based on treatment goals.

Prescribe physical therapy and other rehabilitation treatments as necessary. Consults with physician and other members of the health care team. Refers patients requiring hospitalization to the Detention Facility physician and/or the admitting physician. Makes judgments about administering patient care and medication to patients with appropriate consultation. Coordinates clinical services. Maintains all patient records in compliance with required standards and quality assurance protocols.

Ensures the care of and treatment of inmates as prescribed by the policy, procedures, Mission Statement of the Detention Facility. Provides Advance Life Support treatment under medical emergencies. Responds to emergency situations as necessary. Utilizes various types of medical related machinery and equipment. Maintains medical documentation and files. Maintains the confidentiality and security of health records and medical information in accordance with HIPAA law.

Responsible to ensure safe work methods are followed to prevent injuries and escapes. Provides CPR and/or First Aid as required; safeguards against exposure to blood borne pathogens as required. Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Maintain appropriate, unrestricted credentials, according to the licensure, certification, and registration requirements of the jurisdiction. Position requires a South Carolina Medical License (MD/DO) and Board Certification in Internal Medicine and/or Family Practice in accordance with South Carolina statute; DEA Certification; CPR Basic Life Support or ACLS Certification by the American Heart Association. The position requires the use of a variety of office and computer equipment and related software, including specialized equipment and software unique to job responsibilities.

The position also uses a variety of medical instruments and tools to carry out the daily functions of a physician, i.e., stethoscope, suturing kit, blood pressure cuffs, etc.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master's degree in nursing or a doctor of Nurse Practice from an accredited college or university. Extensive experience in general and/or emergency medical techniques (some of which should include supervisory responsibilities), or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS and OTHER REQUIREMENTS

All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System. Possession of a valid driver's license issued in the state of South Carolina. 18 years of age or older and U.S. Citizen Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of South Carolina and certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Pass a criminal background check and drug screen. Pass job-related written, mathematical, and/or psychological tests. Certifications in first aid and CPR.
