** Position Summary
** The Transplant Hepatologist provides comprehensive care to patients with acute and chronic liver disease and to liver transplant recipients across the full continuum of care — candidate evaluation, waitlist management, perioperative care, and long-term post-transplant follow-up. The physician serves as an integral member of a multidisciplinary transplant team and contributes to clinical excellence, program growth, education, and research.
** Essential Duties and Responsibilities
*** Evaluate patients with end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure for transplant candidacy and present cases to the multidisciplinary selection committee.
* Manage waitlisted patients, including MELD-based prioritization and optimization of medical status.
* Manage complications of cirrhosis and portal hypertension, including ascites, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
* Direct post-transplant medical management, including immunosuppression, prophylaxis, and treatment of infectious, biliary, and vascular complications.
* Diagnose and manage acute and chronic allograft rejection and recurrent liver disease.
* Perform and/or interpret relevant procedures and diagnostics (e.g., paracentesis, liver biopsy interpretation, endoscopic evaluation and management of varices as applicable).
* Participate in a shared inpatient and on-call rotation for the transplant service.
* Collaborate with transplant surgery, hepatobiliary and oncology specialists, coordinators, pharmacists, and allied health.
* Contribute to quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and outcomes reporting (UNOS/OPTN, CMS).
* Support clinical research and teaching of residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers.
** Required Qualifications
*** MD or DO degree.
* Board certification or board eligibility in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the ABIM.
* Board certification or eligibility in Transplant Hepatology (or completion of an accredited Transplant Hepatology fellowship or equivalent training).
* Active, unrestricted FL medical license (or eligibility) and DEA registration.
* Eligibility for medical staff privileges at University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital
** Preferred Qualifications
*** Dedicated transplant hepatology fellowship.
* Experience with in an established liver transplant program, including living donor transplantation.
* Record of scholarly activity, clinical trials, or funded research.
** Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
*** Expertise in immunosuppression management and transplant hepatology.
* Strong skills in managing decompensated cirrhosis and its complications.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary team.
* Commitment to patient safety, quality outcomes, and regulatory standards.
** Physical Requirements & Work Environment
*** Clinical hospital and outpatient environment; ability to perform/assist procedures and respond to urgent clinical needs.
* Ability to meet the physical demands of patient care.
