Job Description

Position Title: Teacher

Responsible To: Principal

Basic Function: Fulfill the requirements of classroom instruction with punctuality, reliability, and responsibility.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Has a prepared unit plan that is appropriate for classroom/content/grade level assignment.
  • Exercise proper care of materials and equipment.
  • Communicate needs of the classroom to the proper personnel.
  • Arrive for work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with other staff members, parents, students, and with administration.
  • Accept assistance, advice, and guidance from those responsible for supervising performance, and make a concerted effort toward improving or refining skills.
  • Share ideas, plans, materials, and facilities.
  • Alert to the district’s, school’s, and his/her own goals and priorities and seeks professional learning appropriate to these needs.
  • Keep confidential information that has been obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure serves professional purpose or is required by law.
  • The teacher, in his/her association with others, respects the rights, feelings, and differences among individuals, and communicates directly with the person(s) involved in any situation.
  • Adhere to professional code of ethics stipulated by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
  • Maintain standards – Employ classroom management techniques that result in a positive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent.
Classroom Management
  • The teacher begins the class promptly.
  • The teacher communicates to students those behaviors expected of them.
  • The students exhibit classroom behaviors, which promotes active engagement from all participants in the lesson.
  • Inappropriate behaviors receive immediate and appropriate teacher intervention.
Materials
  • The teacher chooses appropriate materials and/or equipment for teaching a lesson.
  • The teacher handles efficiently the materials and/or equipment in the classroom setting.
Planning for Instruction – Engage in effective unit/lesson planning
  • Follow school or district-established curriculum documents and processes.
  • Establish appropriate objectives (or learning targets) for each unit/lesson.
  • Utilize effective teaching strategies to promote student engagement and achievement.
Teaching the Lesson – Recognize student differences in needs, abilities, and interests and impart instruction so that these differences are met
  • Communicates with the student the objective of the lesson.
  • Communicate with the student the purpose of the learning and makes learning/content relevant.
  • Relate the learning from the lesson being taught to previous learnings and assists students in making connections.
  • Communicates with students are told how they will be accountable for demonstrating proficiency in the learning.
  • Demonstrate sound, up-to-date knowledge of the subject matter being taught.
  • Check periodically throughout the lesson for the students’ understanding of the objective.
  • Provide practice experiences for the student of the appropriate number and variety to insure mastery of the objective.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of reinforcement theory throughout the lesson.
  • Each aspect of the lesson gives evidence of the teacher’s attention to maintaining a classroom climate conducive to learning (Feeling Tone).
  • Activities of the lesson demonstrate the teacher’s desire to include the interests of the students in the classroom.
  • Encourage, praise, and/or acknowledge student effort appropriately.
  • Manage instruction in such a way that each student demonstrates a measure of success.
  • Evidence that practice is scheduled in such a manner as to guarantee retention of learnings.
  • Gives students the opportunity verbalize the critical attribute(s) of the learning before leaving the lesson.
  • Collect data from the lesson that enables him/her to evaluate each student’s performance, and assists in planning tomorrow’s lesson.

Minimum Qualifications: Valid Kentucky teacher certification for the grade level/content.

Terms of Employment

Salary and work year to be established by the board of education.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of board policy for certified personnel.
