Job Description

Position Title:

Teacher

Responsible To:
Principal

Basic Function:
Fulfill the requirements of classroom instruction with punctuality, reliability, and responsibility.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Has a prepared unit plan appropriate for classroom/content/grade level assignment.
  • Exercises proper care of materials and equipment.
  • Communicates needs of the classroom to the proper personnel.
  • Arrives for work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time.
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with other staff members, parents, students, and with administration.
  • Accepts assistance, advice, and guidance from those responsible for supervising performance, and makes a concerted effort toward improving or refining skills.
  • Shares ideas, plans, materials, and facilities.
  • Alerts to the district’s, school’s, and own goals and priorities and seeks professional learning appropriate to these needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure serves a professional purpose or is required by law.
  • Respects the rights, feelings, and differences among individuals, and communicates directly with the person(s) involved in any situation.
  • Adheres to the professional code of ethics stipulated by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
  • Employs classroom management techniques that result in a positive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent.
A. Classroom Management
  • The teacher begins the class promptly.
  • The teacher communicates the behaviors expected of students, and there is evidence that these behaviors have been communicated.
  • Students exhibit behaviors that promote active engagement from all participants in the lesson.
  • Inappropriate behaviors receive immediate and appropriate teacher intervention.
B. Materials
  • The teacher chooses appropriate materials and/or equipment for the lesson.
  • The teacher handles materials and/or equipment efficiently in the classroom setting.
C. Planning for Instruction – Engage in effective unit/lesson planning
  • Follows school or district-established curriculum documents and processes.
  • Establishes appropriate objectives (or learning targets) for each unit/lesson.
  • Utilizes effective teaching strategies to promote student engagement and achievement.
D. Teaching the Lesson – Recognize student differences in needs, abilities, and interests
  • Communicates the objective of the lesson to students.
  • Communicates the purpose of the learning and makes content relevant.
  • Relates new learning to previous learning and assists students in making connections.
  • Tells students how they will be accountable for demonstrating proficiency in the learning.
  • Demonstrates sound, up-to-date knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Checks periodically throughout the lesson for students’ understanding of the objective.
  • Provides practice experiences of the appropriate number and variety to ensure mastery of the objective.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of reinforcement theory throughout the lesson.
  • Maintains a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Includes students’ interests in the activities of the lesson.
  • Encourages, praises, and acknowledges student effort appropriately.
  • Manages instruction so each student demonstrates a measure of success.
  • Schedules practice to guarantee retention of learning.
  • Gives students the opportunity to verbalize critical attributes of the learning before leaving the lesson.
  • Collects data from the lesson to evaluate each student’s performance and assist in planning the next lesson.
Minimum Qualifications

Valid Kentucky teacher certification for the grade level/content.

Terms of Employment

Salary and work year to be established by the board of education.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of board policy for certified personnel.
