SUBSTITUTE TEACHER - FULL TIME

Substitute Teacher – Full Time

REPORTS TO:

Principal

SUPERVISES: N/A

BASIC FUNCTION:

A substitute teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Full time substitute teachers will report to work at assigned school as determined by the school calendar.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • The terms of employment are designated by the contract.
  • Adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics and demonstrate punctuality and regular attendance;
  • Reports to work at assigned school as determined by school calendar, normally 185 days per contract year;
  • Provides assistance and general support for other substitute teachers as needed;
  • Serves as primary substitute teacher for long-term teacher absences;
  • Teaches scheduled classes. Prepares a written summary of work completed for absent teacher;
  • Makes the absent teacher aware of special situations or problems encountered;
  • Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the absent teacher;
  • Actively monitors students you are supervising;
  • Follows the teacher’s written lesson plans. Consults with the principal and/or staff to resolve questions and/or concerns;
  • Prepares additional classwork ahead of time, appropriate for the age group that you are working with, in case additional materials are needed for the class;
  • Complies with all building procedures and schedules. Promotes the proper use and care of school property;
  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures;
  • Implements effective pupil management procedures. Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code. Intervenes and/or reports concerns to an administrator;
  • Develops and maintains a positive learning environment;
  • Works cooperatively with staff and parents;
  • Incorporates the effective use of available technology;
  • Upholds computer technology acceptable use policies;
  • Assists with transportation of students, excluding bus/CDL requirements, and completes any required transportation trainings and record checks;
  • Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of all privileged information including not posting pictures or comments from the school day on social media;
  • Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised;
  • Supervises non-classroom duties when assigned;
  • Accepts personal responsibility for decisions and conduct;
  • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Classroom management strategies;
  • School rules and discipline procedures;
  • Instructional practices that will support the lessons of the classroom teacher;
  • A variety of content material.

ABILITY TO:

  • Stay focused on students and classroom instruction;
  • Maintain management of the classroom;
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written communications;
  • Collaborate with district and school staff;
  • Demonstrate positive, professional relationships with district personnel, parents, and community members;
  • Provide needed resources, services, and materials for students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking;
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing;
  • Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations;
  • Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching;
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights.

EVALUATION:

  • An annual evaluation of performance will be completed by supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

There are three levels of substitute teaching certification.

  • Certified Substitute:
    An active Kentucky teacher certificate
  • Emergency Certified Substitute: A minimum of 64 college credit hours
  • Emergency Non-Certified Substitute: A minimum of a high school diploma/GED and be 25 years of age OR be currently enrolled in a teacher education program. This level requires 18 hours of training prior to substituting in a classroom.
