CLASS

TITLE:

Classroom Teacher

SUPERVISES: Student Teachers and/or Practicum Students (if applicable)

BASIC FUNCTION:

To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.

The terms of employment are designed by the contract.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Adheres to the Professional Code of Ethics and demonstrates punctuality and regular attendance
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
  • Creates and follows pacing guides annually for all courses
  • Reviews, revises, and updates backward design units regularly
  • Actively monitors and acts upon student achievement data (including benchmark assessments, state assessment data, and classroom assessments)
  • Collects data on student growth and acts upon it to meet individual student needs
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor
  • Establishes and maintains classroom management techniques
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, projects, and related activities to communicate these objectives to students
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups involved
  • Strives to implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives through instruction and action
  • Assesses accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required
  • Diagnoses learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking assistance of district specialists as required
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation
  • Assists the administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and develops reasonable classroom behavior rules and procedures to maintain order fairly and justly
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional teacher aides and volunteers and evaluates their performance cooperatively with department heads
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Principles and procedures associated with specific programs
  • Areas related to all student support programs in the district, including current laws and changes in legislation and regulations relevant to these programs
  • District policies and procedures to effectively carry out job duties
  • Strategies for closing achievement gaps
  • Current teacher evaluation system
  • Current student information system

ABILITY TO:

  • Locate information from local, state, and federal departments
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written communications
  • Collaborate with district and school staff
  • Demonstrate positive, professional relationships with district personnel, parents, and community members
  • Provide needed resources, services, and materials for students

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work performed while standing, sitting, and/or walking
  • Ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing
  • Use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations
  • Ability to bend, squat, crawl, climb, reach, and lift, carry, push, or pull light weights

EVALUATION:

  • Annual development of Professional Growth Plan
  • Annual evaluation of job performance by supervisor according to district approved evaluation plan

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in field of assignment (minimum requirement)
  • Valid Kentucky Teaching Certification for area and grade level of assignment
