Job Description

Responsible to: Superintendent

Basic Function: Effective instructional leadership and overall school management.

Instructional Leadership

Manage an instructional program where teaching & learning and continuous improvement are priorities.

  • Develop a decision‑making and communication structure that assures effective planning, communication, and problem solving within areas of responsibility.
  • Organize the school so that faculty and student assignments promote optimum use of talent, time, space, and resources.
  • Delegate authority and responsibility to assistants, faculty, and staff so that each person’s talents and interests are utilized.
  • Provide opportunities for each faculty and staff member to grow, develop, and experience success.
  • Promote program improvement through comprehensive management planning that includes goals, activities, and timelines in instruction and curriculum areas. Monitor the plans to ensure completion and achievement of goals.
  • Plan professional learning programs that meet the needs of the faculty and the goals of the school district, fostering a positive attitude toward professional learning.
Faculty and Staff Personnel Management
  • Utilize the faculty selection process to identify the most competent candidates for employment.
  • Observe performance via formative evaluation of certified and classified employees; when necessary, write prescriptions for performance improvement.
  • Conduct summative evaluation per state and local board policies.
  • Use board‑approved models and processes when observing, evaluating, and conferencing with certified employees.
  • Develop appropriate faculty and staff personnel job expectations, job descriptions, and regulations.
  • Communicate positive performance expectations clearly and monitor each employee’s performance to keep staff on‑task and build good interpersonal relationships.
  • Develop a positive school climate by involving faculty and staff in decision making and problem solving, building trust, respect, cohesiveness, and high morale.
  • Accurately complete all personnel records and reports, forwarding them to appropriate persons on time.
Student Personnel Management
  • Provide an effective support system for students with learning and behavior problems, leading to desired behavior (positive attitude toward school and faculty).
  • Promote optimum attendance by implementing a systematic program to reduce absenteeism.
  • Provide a student advocacy program involving all faculty; supply a specialized guidance counselor education program to meet individual developmental needs.
  • Manage student data through an accountable, confidential, and efficient records‑keeping system (grades, attendance, test data, health records, census files).
  • Provide formalized communication channels for students that involve them in appropriate classroom and school decisions.
  • Utilize district resources to plan in‑school student services and address special student needs.
  • Manage a comprehensive testing program; communicate results with students, staff, and parents, using data to improve instructional programs and student services.
School Business and Resources Management
  • Adhere to proper accounting procedures and/or instructional resource allocation.
  • Manage the textbook program or instructional resource allocation as required by law, planning selection, ordering, inventory, and student accountability.
  • Manage requisition, use, and maintenance of furniture, media, equipment, and other building items efficiently; report maintenance and repairs appropriately.
Leadership in Public Relations
  • Promote a comprehensive public relations program through an annual written plan showing goals, activities, and timelines.
  • Evaluate the plan’s success to ensure goals are realistic and that positive support from stakeholders is increasing.
