Job Description

Position Title: Teacher

Basic Function: Fulfill the requirements of classroom instruction with punctuality, reliability, and responsibility.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Has a prepared unit plan that is appropriate for classroom/content/grade level assignment.
  • Exercise proper care of materials and equipment.
  • Communicate needs of the classroom to the proper personnel.
  • Arrive for work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with other staff members, parents, students, and with administration.
  • Accept assistance, advice, and guidance from those responsible for supervising his/her performance, and make a concerted effort toward improving or refining skills.
  • Share ideas, plans, materials, and facilities.
  • Alert to the district’s, school’s, and his/her own goals and priorities and seeks professional learning appropriate to these needs.
  • Keep confidential information obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure serves professional purpose or is required by law.
  • Respect the rights, feelings, and differences among individuals and communicate directly with involved persons.
  • Adhere to professional code of ethics stipulated by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
  • Maintain standards by employing classroom management techniques that result in a positive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent.
Classroom Management
  • The teacher begins the class promptly.
  • Communicates to students the expected behaviors, or there is evidence that expected behaviors have been communicated.
  • Students exhibit classroom behaviors that promote active engagement from all participants in the lesson.
  • Inappropriate behaviors receive immediate and appropriate teacher intervention.
Materials
  • The teacher chooses appropriate materials and/or equipment for teaching a lesson.
  • Handles efficiently the materials and/or equipment in the classroom setting.
Planning for Instruction
  • Follow school or district-established curriculum documents and processes.
  • Establish appropriate objectives (or learning targets) for each unit/lesson.
  • Utilize effective teaching strategies to promote student engagement and achievement.
Teaching the Lesson
  • Recognize student differences in needs, abilities, and interests and impart instruction so that these differences are met.
  • Communicate with the student the objective of the lesson.
  • Communicate with the student the purpose of the learning and make learning/content relevant.
  • Relate the learning from the lesson being taught to previous learnings and assist students in making connections.
  • Inform students of how they will be accountable for demonstrating proficiency in the learning.
  • Demonstrate sound, up-to-date knowledge of the subject matter being taught.
  • Check periodically throughout the lesson for students’ understanding of the objective.
  • Provide practice experiences for the student of appropriate number and variety to ensure mastery of the objective.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of reinforcement theory throughout the lesson.
  • Maintain a classroom climate conducive to learning (Feeling Tone).
  • Include students’ interests in classroom activities.
  • Encourage, praise, and/or acknowledge student effort appropriately.
  • Manage instruction so each student demonstrates a measure of success.
  • Schedule practice to ensure retention of learnings.
  • Give students the opportunity to verbalize the critical attribute(s) of the learning before leaving the lesson.
  • Collect data from the lesson to evaluate each student’s performance and assist in planning tomorrow’s lesson.
Minimum Qualifications

Valid Kentucky teacher certification for the grade level/content.

Terms of Employment

Salary and work year to be established by the board of education.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of board policy for certified personnel.
