At the Kentucky Department of Corrections, the Division of Education plays a crucial role supporting the department and the reentry of offenders back into the community. The mission of the Division of Education is to prepare every offender through the advancement of academic achievement and work-ready skills for successful reentry.
As education corrections professionals, it is our job to assist in the rehabilitation and reentry of offenders by working within the department, with community partners, and state agencies to increase community safety and reduce recidivism rates. The Corrections Education Specialist I will provide direct instruction in general education content areas (i.e., math, reading, science, social studies), and support in planning, facilitating, and coordinating educational opportunities to offenders within the correctional environment.
Responsibilities- Provides targeted general education instruction (classroom and performance based) to students and adult inmates in a correctional setting, which includes promoting education during in-mate orientation and to the general population.
- Maintains order and discipline in the classroom.
- Develops lesson plans on educational topics within assigned correctional facility.
- Adheres to approved curriculum, expected outcomes, and program requirements.
- Submits all transcripts and documents to the appropriate agencies for review and approval.
- Advises students as needed and assesses their attainment using reliable criteria.
- Maintains federal and state reports regarding student assessment and progress.
- Makes appropriate referrals when needed.
- Assists with coordinating special programs regarding educational needs and assessments within the department.
- Enters daily attendance into the Kentucky Offender Management System (KOMS) and student information into the KY Adult Education Reporting System (KAERS).
- Maintains an accurate and complete inventory of all classroom equipment, tools, computers, and toxic‑caustic supplies used within the classroom, as well as is responsible for monitoring student use of these items.

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in education (academic).

Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
