Salary: $14.11 to $20.27 Per Hour
Instructional Assistant II
Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups typically in programs with exceptional children or equivalent programs; monitor and report student progress. Instructional Assistant II incumbents work within a complex program that requires additional skills and increased independence of action.
Representative Duties- Help tutor individuals or small groups, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the teacher; keep records of student progress.
- Act as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams; develop relationships with parents and team members; serve as a resource person on the student personnel evaluation team.
- Transport students to and from activities and assist in preparation for activities.
- Prepare and organize lessons; administer and score tests according to guidelines; assist in determining English proficiency of identified students.
- Assist in administering diagnostics and other tests; score and record results; read, understand, and help implement student IEPs.
- Monitor and report student behavior per approved procedures; report progress; assist with lab work as needed.
- Perform routine clerical duties, such as preparation of classroom materials, operating copy machines, and maintaining records.
- Support the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, exhibits, operating audiovisual and training equipment, and managing paperwork.
- Oversee students during labs or other activities; keep inventory of supplies as needed.
- Assist students with physical tasks such as dressing, moving between rooms, using the lavatory, and a bus ride.
- Provide examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance to students.
- Consult with teachers as needed to meet student needs.
- Contact parents of absent students; make home visits when necessary.
- Ensure health and safety by following regulations.
- Direct group activities, assist at lunchroom, playground, and on field trips; participate in emergency drills.
- Attend meetings and in‑service training.
- Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of basic subjects taught in district schools (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, reading), safe classroom and playground practices, correct English usage, interpersonal skills, and basic record‑keeping techniques.
Abilities include learning child guidance principles; communicating effectively with students, parents, staff and community; clerical support; printing and writing legibly; basic math; understanding and following directions; applying policies; working cooperatively; monitoring student behavior; operating instructional and office equipment; maintaining confidentiality.
Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma, GED certificate or proof of progressing toward a GED, plus one year of experience working with children in an organized setting.
