Location: Northern

The Coordinator of Small Animal Care will work within the scope of practice for the Veterinary Technician as described by the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as the guidelines of OSHA and USDA . The Coordinator will work closely with students and designated faculty to assist in the management of the shelter program via communication and invoicing, employee oversight, and oversight of the care of the shelter animals while in care of LMU .

This person will be required to assist with health concerns of both canine and feline patients, oversee kennel management duties, assist in both Surgical Skills and Clinical Skills Labs, and teach in labs where appropriate under the supervision of a veterinarian. This person will be the point of contact for shelters and students while ensuring OSHA and USDA compliance.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of: A.S. or A.A.S. in Veterinary Medical Technology;.
  • currently holds, or eligible to hold a valid veterinary technician license in the Commonwealth of Virginia state
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years clinical experience in various settings;
  • minimum of one year being an instructor in an associate degree level veterinary technology program or veterinary medical college

  • assist in the education of the student under the direction of designated faculty while the student learns the veterinary medical clinical skills process as he/she acquires knowledge, understanding, and the entry‑level skills required of veterinarians;
  • maintain records and evaluations of the students for the activities during the clinical experiences;
  • ensure that all OSHA and USDA guidelines are implemented in student clinical student activities,
  • oversee medical records of animals that are used in teaching;
  • comply with all IACUC guidelines;
  • work within the scope and guidelines of SACS and AVMA accrediting bodies;
  • assist in the supervision of lab and clinical activities for assigned courses and educational activities;
  • organize the acquisition and discharge of shelter animals for teaching purposes;
  • supervise kennel staff and management of kennel activities;
  • demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in supporting and promoting success in the CVM ; and
  • other duties as assigned
