Job Description Summary
The Corrections Instructor – High School Equivalency will contribute to the success of College and Career Readiness students by teaching students in a Corrections program skills that will help the students succeed in taking and passing HiSET subject tests. The instructor is responsible for providing instruction to adult learners of varying academic levels. The instructor helps students meet necessary goals and prepares them for secondary coursework.
One position needs to be filled –afternoon instructor from 12:30-3:30. Classes meet Monday-Thursday.
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas:
Teaching, Adult Education, Secondary Education, English, or Math. - A minimum of two years of full-time or equivalent experience in teaching Literacy, Basic Skills, Adult High School, WIOA Funded Programs, K-12, or closely related organizations.
- Willingness to work with justice-involved individuals from a correctional facility.
- Willingness to work primarily from an offsite center or campus.
- Understanding of and commitment to the unique mission and vision of Forsyth Tech.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in one of the following areas:
Teaching, Adult Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Education or other related field. - Working knowledge of ADVANSYS , Colleague or any other ERP software management system.
- Experience in using data to make programmatic improvements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develop lesson plans and course materials that maximize student learning in subject matter areas:
Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. Evaluate student progress regularly, with an emphasis on building reading and math skills to a level of high school proficiency on TABE , CASAS , or other approved standardized assessments. - Develop lesson plans aligned to the NCCCS College and Career Readiness Adult Education Content Standards.
- Employ appropriate and differentiated teaching and learning strategies – i.e. individual, group, hands‑on and contextualized instruction as well as lecture and discussion. Incorporate instructional technology when available and appropriate.
- Assist in providing academic guidance to students as needed to achieve academic and career goals.
- Review course content and materials as well as student evaluations and make recommendations to Coordinator for course revision and/or development.
- Complete and submit working hours monthly. Enter student attendance in our database weekly.
- Implement best practices for the retention and recruitment of students.
- Adhere to institutional policies and procedures. Enforce rules concerning student behavior.
- Attend and actively participate in team meetings and twelve hours of professional development annually.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Instructional Coordinator, Dean, or Vice President.
- Make recommendations to Coordinator for supplies, equipment, and equipment repairs.
- Assume responsibility for being familiar with and adhering to all policies of the College.
