Longwood University invites applications for the Director of Athletic Academic Services (GA301) in Athletics. The Director will provide strategic leadership and oversight of academic support services for Longwood University's student-athletes. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing programs that promote academic achievement, NCAA eligibility, retention, persistence, graduation, and student development. The Director collaborates with academic departments, student success offices, faculty, coaches, compliance staff, and university leadership to ensure student-athletes receive comprehensive support throughout their academic experience while maintaining compliance with institutional, conference, and NCAA regulations.
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.

Responsibilities- Provide leadership and strategic direction for all athletic academic support initiatives.
- Supervise and evaluate academic advisors, graduate assistants, tutors, and academic support personnel.
- Develop and implement comprehensive academic success programs to support student-athlete retention, persistence, eligibility, and graduation.
- Monitor academic performance and progress-toward-degree requirements for all student-athletes.
- Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional academic regulations and eligibility standards.
- Analyze and report key academic metrics, including Academic Progress Rate (APR), Graduation Success Rate (GSR), retention rates, and grade-point averages.
- Develop intervention strategies for at-risk student-athletes and coordinate support services.
- Serve as the primary liaison between athletics and academic affairs, including faculty, advisors, registrar staff, and student support units.
- Oversee study hall operations, tutoring programs, learning support services, and academic enrichment initiatives.
- Collaborate with coaches to promote a culture of academic accountability and achievement.
- Coordinate orientation and transition programming for incoming student-athletes.
- Maintain accurate academic records, reports, and documentation for institutional and NCAA requirements.
- Prepare reports and presentations for athletics leadership, university administration, and external stakeholders.
- Manage departmental budgets related to academic support services.
- Participate in departmental leadership meetings and strategic planning initiatives.
- Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and student well‑being initiatives within athletics.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Education, Sports Administration, or a related field.
- One year of progressively responsible experience in academic advising, student success, academic support services, or intercollegiate athletics.
- Knowledge of NCAA Division I academic eligibility, progress-toward-degree requirements, and academic support best practices.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience.
- Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with faculty, administrators, coaches, and students.
- Experience utilizing student information systems, academic tracking software, and Microsoft Office applications.
- One or more years of experience in athletic academic support services.
- Experience supervising professional staff.
- Demonstrated success improving APR, GSR, retention, and graduation outcomes.
- Experience working within a Division I athletics program.
- Knowledge of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services best practices and NCAA compliance systems.
- Experience with strategic planning, assessment, and program evaluation.
