:
The Self-Contained Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with significant cognitive, developmental, physical, behavioral, and/or communication needs. The teacher is responsible for creating a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment while providing individualized instruction aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), the Georgia Standards of Excellence, and Georgia’s adapted curriculum requirements.
The teacher will work closely with paraprofessionals, related-service providers, families, administrators, and other school personnel to support each student’s academic, functional, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, and independent-living needs.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Hold or be eligible for a valid Georgia teaching certificate in Special Education Adapted Curriculum (P–12); or
- Hold a valid Georgia Special Education teaching certificate and be willing to complete all requirements necessary to add the Special Education Adapted Curriculum field within a timeline established by the district.
- Meet all certification requirements established by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
- Pass all required background checks.
- Maintain required certifications and professional learning throughout employment.
- Previous experience teaching students with significant disabilities in a self-contained setting.
- Experience developing and implementing standards-based IEPs.
- Knowledge of the Georgia Alternate Assessment.
- Training or experience in assistive technology, augmentative and alternative communication, behavior supports, de-escalation strategies, and functional life-skills instruction.
- Plan and provide individualized, specially designed instruction based on each student’s IEP, present levels of performance, goals, strengths, and identified needs.
- Provide instruction aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence and applicable adapted curriculum standards.
- Develop, implement, review, and revise legally compliant IEPs in accordance with federal, state, and district requirements.
- Serve as the case manager for assigned students and ensure that all required special education timelines, meetings, documentation, and notices are completed.
- Collect and maintain ongoing progress-monitoring data for every IEP goal.
- Use student data to adjust instruction, develop new goals, determine appropriate supports, and report progress to parents and the IEP team.
- Prepare students for and administer the Georgia Alternate Assessment and other required district or state assessments in accordance with testing guidelines.
- Provide instruction in academic, communication, social, behavioral, self-help, community-based, vocational, and independent-living skills as appropriate.
- Implement students’ accommodations, modifications, assistive technology, communication systems, behavior intervention plans, health plans, and safety plans with fidelity.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to support students’ participation in inclusive settings, electives, activities, and other school programs when appropriate.
- Coordinate services with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, school psychologists, behavior specialists, and other service providers.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student progress, needs, concerns, and successes.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records, including IEP documentation, service logs, progress-monitoring data, parent contacts, behavior data, assessment information, and Medicaid documentation when applicable.
