Interior Design Teaching Assistant Position Overview

This role assists with classroom instruction, student guidance, lesson preparation, grading, and other academic responsibilities while gaining hands-on experience in interior design education.

The position is designed not only to provide instructional support but also to serve as a
mentorship and professional development opportunity for individuals interested in becoming future instructors
. Teaching Assistants will work closely with the Lead Instructor to develop their skills in classroom leadership, student communication, curriculum delivery, and design education.

• Assist students during class activities, exercises, studio work, and independent project time.
• Provide guidance and clarification on assignments, design concepts, and course expectations under the direction of the Lead Instructor.
• Help students develop confidence in their design decisions and strengthen their problem-solving skills.
• Provide individualized assistance to students who may need additional explanation or support.
• Encourage student participation and contribute to a positive, professional, and collaborative classroom environment.
• Help identify students who may need additional academic support and communicate concerns to the Lead Instructor.

• Help organize materials and resources needed for upcoming lessons and projects.
• Review lesson objectives and course materials with the Lead Instructor prior to instruction when appropriate.
• Assist with classroom setup and organization for lectures, demonstrations, presentations, critiques, and hands-on activities.

• Assist with light grading of assignments, exercises, participation, and other coursework using guidelines established by the Lead Instructor.
• Help review student work for completeness and adherence to assignment requirements.
• Assist with documenting student progress and identifying areas where additional instruction may be beneficial.
• Provide constructive student feedback when directed by the Lead Instructor.
• Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding student grades, performance, and academic concerns.

• Support the Lead Instructor during lectures, demonstrations, critiques, and classroom discussions.
• Reinforce concepts previously taught by the Lead Instructor.
• Assist with small-group instruction and individual student consultations.
• Help facilitate classroom discussions and design critiques.
• As experience develops, assist with demonstrations or portions of lessons under the supervision of the Lead Instructor.

A key component of this position is preparing Teaching Assistants who demonstrate interest and aptitude for future instructional opportunities.

Teaching Assistants may:

• Observe and learn effective teaching strategies from the Lead Instructor.
• Gain experience in lesson planning, classroom management, student engagement, and instructional delivery.
• Participate in conversations regarding curriculum development and teaching methodology.
• Receive coaching and feedback from the Lead Instructor regarding instructional skills.
• Gradually take on additional classroom responsibilities as competency and confidence develop.
• Practice leading demonstrations, discussions, critiques, or portions of lessons under supervision.
• Develop an understanding of the expectations and responsibilities associated with becoming an interior design instructor.

Successful Teaching Assistants may be considered for future instructional opportunities based on school needs, subject-matter expertise, performance, professionalism, and demonstrated teaching ability.

• Education, professional experience, or demonstrated knowledge in interior design.
• Strong understanding of foundational interior design principles and terminology.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Patient, approachable, and comfortable working with students with varying levels of experience and learning styles.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to accept direction while also taking initiative when appropriate.
• Professional, dependable, and committed to creating a positive student experience.
• Interest in teaching, mentoring, or interior design education strongly preferred.

The ideal Teaching Assistant is knowledgeable about interior design, enthusiastic about helping others learn, and interested in developing as an educator. They should enjoy working collaboratively with both students and instructors and be able to balance encouragement with professional expectations.

This position is especially well suited for an individual who would like to explore or pursue a future teaching role while gaining practical experience and mentorship from the Lead Instructor.

Primarily Tuesday through Thursday during school hours (9am-3pm). Some Wednesday evening and/or Saturday assistance in the classroom may be needed.…
