The UOGML was founded in 1970 and serves as a major institution for marine science research in the Western Pacific and Micronesia. The UOGML has a strong track record in basic and applied research in ecology, taxonomy, fisheries, and monitoring of coastal ecosystems. Recent research initiatives have expanded UOGML’s capacities in marine genomics, coastal oceanography, and biodiversity collections, with an emphasis on land-sea connections, coastal development, marine biodiversity, and sustainability in the age of climate change.

The UOGML is uniquely positioned to pursue the above agenda given its close proximity to some of the most diverse and unique marine environments in the world.

Salary Range

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience relevant to the position. The following salary figures are for nine (9) months:

  • Assistant Professor: $52,408 – $105,140 Per Academic Year

Compensation for employment shall not commence until all hiring conditions are met, including required employment visa. Annual salary will be prorated, if start of employment is delayed.

Character of Duties

We are seeking an exceptional candidate with expertise in marine microbiology. The successful candidate will design, implement, and conduct research on marine microbiomes and/or eDNA and collaborate with ongoing ecological, biodiversity, and physiological studies at the Marine Laboratory. As such, we are seeking individuals who are collegial, collaborative, and can work well as part of a team.

The successful individual is expected to develop a viable and energetic research program, make collaborative contributions to University STEM‑centric research programs, and may also contribute to other local and regional projects in a supporting role. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty that have expertise in marine ecology, coastal oceanography, genomics, systematics, biodiversity collections, and bioinformatics. The candidate is expected to study microbiomes of tropical reef organisms to establish novel research projects and to complement ongoing studies at the Marine Laboratory.

To develop a successful research program, the candidate is expected to seek extramural funding and recruit graduate students. The candidate will be required to develop and teach at least one graduate‑level, semester‑long course in marine microbiology that will be taught once every two years. The candidate will also be required to develop a seminar course(s) of their own design that will be taught intermittently.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in marine biology, ecology, microbiology, or another appropriate discipline from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent. The successful candidate will need to be based in Guam and have a strong publication record in marine microbiology and/or eDNA. Must be willing to teach online.

Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of postdoctoral experience. Work experience in remote locations, demonstrated organizational skills, a strong teaching record, and the ability to deal with unexpected challenges are valued for this position. A demonstrated capacity to garner external research funding is essential. Experience working and teaching in online learning programs.
