The Johns Hopkins University's Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics invites applicants for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow in the lab of Professor Shiqian Ma. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. prior to their appointment start date, and no later than 01/01/2027 and show definite promise in research and teaching. This position may include a teaching load of one course per year, depending on funding and needs of the department, so that the appointee will have ample time for research.

The appointment is for one year, with possibility of renewal, depending on funding availability.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with Professor Shiqian Ma on mathematical foundations and optimization of modern machine learning and AI. Particular interests include the theory and design of adaptive algorithms, methods, exploiting geometric structures in optimization, and optimization algorithms motivated by the training of large-scale machine learning models. A strong background and demonstrated research experience in machine learning and optimization are required.

Applicants are asked to submit (a) an AMS standard coversheet; (b) a curriculum vitae; (c) a description of research interests and have at least three letters of recommendation submitted.

Salary Range

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
