Overview

The Writing Consultant will consult with students (both on campus and virtually with distance students) on writing assignments in order to improve their writing mechanics, structure of content, and internal organization. The Writing Consultant may also coordinate with volunteers from among the faculty (and qualified graduate-students) who wish to assist in writing consultations. The purpose of this job is to provide a service to students to promote student success.

Responsibilities ii
  • Receiving requests for consultations and setting up appointments, whether in person or via video conferencing;
  • Consulting with students on specific writing assignments or projects, focusing on improving writing mechanics, paper structure and organization, and style;
  • Maintaining records of student consultations;
  • With students' permission, retaining files from before and after the consultation process in order to demonstrate effectiveness of consultation sessions;
  • Reviewing, maintaining, and improving databases and administrative files;
  • Advertising consultation services to faculty and students;
  • Coordinating and training faculty and qualified graduate-student volunteers who wish to assist with writing consultations, including scheduling their sessions and ensuring consistency in consultation quality and record-keeping;
  • Other related activities as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrable grasp of English grammar, academic prose, academic research and CMOS citation conventions, and general structures of academic research papers;
  • Firm grasp on the conventions of Chicago author-date citation formatting;
  • Professional communication skills, both via e-mail and in personal consultation sessions;
  • Familiarity with the features of Word;
  • Comfort with using video-conferencing software (Teams and/or Zoom);
  • Experience teaching or consulting with those for whom English is not a first language is preferred, but not required;
  • Bachelor's degree or higher required; terminal degree is preferred, but not required.
Hours
  • Part-time, average of 10 hours per week per 16-week fall and spring semester.
  • The hours per week are flexible, per the needs of students and faculty for writing consulting, which is often more intense later in the semester. Some evening or weekend activities or consultations may be desired. For each fall or spring semester, the total number of 160 hours should not be exceeded.
Physical Requirements

Sufficient health to meet with students, either in-person or virtually. Significant mental effort but little to no physical effort will be required.

i A seconded member is a paid employee from another institution who is loaned to DIU through a partnership agreement.
