Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional
Job Description
Starting Date: Immediately
Purpose: To assist teachers with completing instructional and other professional duties.
Reports To: Principal
Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED
- Desire to continue career improvement, plus one of the following:
- Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education (e.g., community college, college, or university)
- Obtained an associate’s degree or higher
- Met a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrated, by passing the Kentucky Para educator Assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
- General clerical skills
- Computer data entry experience preferred
- Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work
- Certification in First Aid, CPR, medication administration, and student-specific training may be required
- Bilingual ability may be required per advertised vacancy specifications
- Assist teachers with instructional tasks, including but not limited to one‑on‑one tutoring, small-group instruction, organizing instructional and other materials, assisting in computer labs, classroom management, and parental involvement activities, and translation as needed
- Assist with non‑instructional responsibilities
- Supervise students in bus areas, classroom, lunchroom, play areas, study time, and other assigned areas
- Prepare materials to reinforce the regular classroom lesson under the teacher’s direction
- Participate in school meetings and professional development activities involving program orientation, curriculum design, materials, and evaluation procedures
- Observe confidentiality of students and student records at all times
- Assist with student supervision during field trips, as assigned by the Principal or Designee
- Use appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate for learning
- Make appropriate referrals to the teacher, guidance counselor, and/or school nurse
- Immediately report accidents, assaults, destruction of property, and abusive behavior to the teacher and/or principal
- Administer medication to students if designated by the principal and after appropriate training by the school nurse, including emergency medication by injection and/or suppository
- Maintain knowledge of blood‑borne pathogens and practice Universal Precautions to ensure optimal communicable disease control in the school classroom setting
- Attend and pass medication administration and student‑specific training
- Obtain and maintain first aid and CPR certification
- Perform general office and clerical tasks as directed
- Provide coverage for secretary as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education, and/or Designee

- Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
- Ability to exert in excess of 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, and reach
- Ability to push, pull, or lift exerting up to 30 pounds of force
- Finger dexterity for picking, pinching, typing, or other tasks primarily with fingers
- Grasping – applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
- Feeling – perceiving attributes of objects (size, shape, temperature, texture) by touching with the skin, especially fingertips
- Repetitive motion – substantial and continuous movements of wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word
- Hearing acuity – perceiving speech and environmental sounds at normal loudness levels
- Visual acuity – seeing enough to read numbers and text, operate equipment, inspect machines, etc.
- Vision – color identification and peripheral vision as described
The worker is subject to both environmental conditions as activities occur both inside and outside.
SalaryCommensurate with the school district’s Classified Salary Schedule.
