Description

We seek one part-time instructor to join Vanderbilt University’s Department of Medicine, Health, and Society, a large, interdisciplinary major designed to prepare the next generation of national and international health leaders—from doctors and nurses to economists, researchers, and policy makers. This instructor will be appointed to teach at the new Vanderbilt New York City campus, located in Chelsea. This ia a non-tenure-track, part-time Lecturer position with a one-semester appointment effective Spring 2027.

Duties involve teaching one section of MHS-NYC 2550 What is Health? (and how do you get it)?, supervising student internships, and attending weekly meetings with other instructors. This is a part-time, course-based appointment renewable each semester, conditional upon performance and need.

MHS-NYC 2250 is an interdisciplinary exploration of how health is defined, contested, and pursued across social, cultural, and policy domains, including infrastructure, activism, hospitals and clinics, politics, media, and popular discourse. Students use the city as a laboratory to analyze health as a social good, a business, and a moral imperative.

Qualifications

A PhD in the humanities, social sciences, an MD or degree in clinical specialties, or a related field is required. Experience with experiential education is preferred.

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, with the expected salary to be $9,000 per course.

Questions about the position should be directed to Jonathan Metzl, Jonathan.

Metzl, Chair of the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society
