Associate Teacher - Early Childhood Development Center (ONSITE)

Job Summary

The Early Childhood Education Center Associate Teacher supports the delivery of a high-quality early childhood education program within the University of Michigan-Flint Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC). Working under the functional direction of the Lead Teacher, this position helps implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and maintain a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment that reflects the Center's Reggio Emilia-inspired philosophy.

Through collaboration, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous improvement, the Associate Teacher supports the Center's mission of providing exceptional early childhood education and serving as a valued resource for the University and community.

Responsibilities:

100 % Assist the Lead Teacher with curriculum, lesson plans, learning centers, activities, outdoor experiences, and classroom routines.

  • Provide active supervision and attentive care while maintaining required ratios and group size.
  • Support arrival, departure, meals, toileting or diapering, rest, transitions, and daily care routines.
  • Use positive guidance and support children's cognitive, language, physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Assist with observations, assessment information, portfolios, classroom records, and family communication.
  • Prepare, organize, clean, sanitize, and maintain classroom materials, learning areas, and equipment.
  • Support inclusion and implement established care, accommodation, and behavior-support plans as directed.
  • Follow incident, injury, illness, medication, emergency, safe-sleep, food-service, and mandated-reporter procedures.
  • Participate in classroom planning, staff meetings, training, coaching, Great Start to Quality, and GSRP when assigned.

Required Qualifications:

For non-GSRP classrooms:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Meets all Michigan licensing requirements applicable to a child care teacher and program staff member.
  • Maintains required comprehensive background-check eligibility and completes Mi Registry verification, orientation, health and safety training, CPR/first aid, and ongoing professional development within required time frames.
  • Ability to provide active supervision, follow directions, work cooperatively on a classroom team, and communicate respectfully with children, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to meet attendance, scheduling, and physical requirements necessary for safe classroom care and supervision.
  • Prompt and consistent attendance

For GSRP classrooms:

In addition to the required qualifications above, GSRP Associate Teachers must have one of the following:

  • An associate degree in early childhood education, child development, or an accepted equivalent;
  • A valid Center-Based Birth-to-Five Child Development Associate (CDA) credential;
  • A previously issued and still applicable 120-hour GSRP approval letter.

This recruitment is seeking candidates who are already fully credentialed for assignment to a GSRP-funded classroom. The University is not relying on a future credential-completion or compliance-plan pathway to satisfy this desired qualification.

Candidates who do not meet GSRP requirements will be considered for a non-GSRP teaching assignment.

Compensation

This posting is for multiple available positions. Starting salary will be based on relevant education, credentials, training, directly related experience, internal equity, and University policy.
