School Counselor

• Maintains a schedule of counseling sessions and meets with students at their scheduled times.
• Participates and coordinates group and individual student counseling sessions.
• Organizes meeting with outside resources and schools.
• Provides students and families with information regarding community resources and assists with the acquisition of those services as needed.
• Maintains necessary documents in accordance with State and Federal law.
• Cultivates positive and collaborative relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
• Maintains appropriate levels of confidentiality in communication/interactions.
• Participates in professional growth and development opportunities.
• Possesses knowledge of counseling theory and techniques.
• Demonstrates knowledge of child and adolescent development. This would include knowledge of child development, learning processes, student’s skills, knowledge, and language proficiency, and then as well as student’s interests and special needs.
• Establishes goals for the counseling program appropriate to the setting and the students served
• Manages relationships with students and ensures that the relationships among students are positive and supportive.
• Teaches students how to engage in respectful interactions with each other by being a model of respect.
• Displays clear standards of behavior and occasionally refer to them during lessons and counseling sessions.
• Responds to misbehavior that shows respect to the student and helps them understand why students may conduct themselves inappropriately.
• Uses counseling techniques to help students acquire skills in decision making and problem solving.
• Works with outside agencies to meet individual student needs.
• Continually seeks ways to improve the counseling program and makes changes as needed in response to student, parent, and teacher input.
• Seeks alternative approaches to help students when they encounter difficulty in learning.
• Uses provided office and district technology to enhance counseling sessions and engages students in learning.
• Communicates with families by providing opportunities to understand the counseling program and their child’s progress. Keeps families up to date on school activities.
• Mediates conflict between students and staff.

• Illinois Professional Educator License with a school support personnel endorsement for school counselor.
• Proficiency in counseling and in other functions that may be needed as supplements to examinations.
• Ability to guard, maintain, and preserve confidential information.
• Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Ability to communicate to students, parents and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner.
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to work with students, teachers, education support personnel, building administrators and the general public.
• Ability to enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.
• Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Requires employee to have the ability to push/pull up to 10 lbs.
