Part-Time Faculty - Psychology Department

The University of Southern Maine’s Psychology Department is seeking part-time instructor applicants for our Spring 2027 semester, beginning January 19, 2027.

We are seeking instructors to teach 1 – 2 in person sections of Abnormal Psychology (PSY 233), with the possibility of teaching Introduction to Psychology (PSY 100) and an upper-level elective.

Instructors will be responsible for the full delivery and grading of the course. Responsibilities include developing the course, teaching, assessing student performance, and meeting with students as needed. The instructor will be provided with the course learning objectives, program competencies, and suggested topical outline and will be given a previous course syllabus available for reference.

The University of Southern Maine Psychology Department offers students a strong foundation in psychological science while providing opportunities to explore the diverse ways psychology contributes to understanding individuals, communities, and society. Faculty are dedicated to creating an engaging and supportive learning environment that emphasizes critical thinking, research, experiential learning, and the application of psychological knowledge.

Abnormal Psychology (PSY 233) - The etiology, development, and manifestation of the major forms of mental illness with particular emphasis upon the neuroses and psychoses. Psychological, social, and biological factors that contribute to maladjustment are examined.

Introduction to Psychology (PSY 100) - Introduction to the study of behavior as a natural science, including the following topics: research methods, biological foundations of behavior, sensation and perception, human development, motivation and emotion, learning and cognition, personality, psychopathology, and social behavior.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience, as determined by the Part-Time Faculty Association of Maine (PATFA), an affiliate of the national American Federation of Teachers (AFT) union. In addition, The Center for Academic Innovation provides learning design consulting and faculty development opportunities to help faculty to create engaging programs, courses and lesson plans grounded in evidence-based best practices for every modality.
