Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Assists with the efficient operation and utilization of the Automotive Lab under the direction of the Automotive Lab Coordinator. Supports the day-to-day maintenance and operation of the AST educational fleet, lab equipment, supplies, inventories, and related records. Provides technical, operational, and customer service support to instructors, students, staff, and visitors to the Automotive Lab.

  • Assists the Automotive Lab Coordinator with the day-to-day operation and utilization of the Automotive Lab.
  • Responsible for Automotive Lab outreach activities, including participating in and conducting high school events, open houses, spotlight events, and individual and group tours.
  • Assists with the setup and preparation of demonstration apparatus, equipment, materials, and work areas for specific classes and laboratory activities.
  • Assists with ordering, receiving, stocking, and monitoring lab supplies, consumables, equipment, and materials needed for daily laboratory operations.
  • Maintains inventory records and assists with maintaining databases and other documentation related to laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Assists with the coordination of space and materials utilization to accommodate students, instructors, staff, and other College departments.
  • Supports established laboratory procedures, safety rules, and instructions for instructors and students and brings safety or operational concerns to the attention of the Automotive Lab Coordinator.
  • Assists with vendor communications, obtaining quotes, and processing requests for equipment, supplies, and services as directed by the Automotive Lab Coordinator.
  • Works independently on assigned tasks and collaborates with the Automotive Lab Coordinator, program chair, instructors, students, and other College personnel as needed.
  • Assists the Automotive Lab Coordinator with the maintenance and upkeep of educational fleet vehicles, shop equipment, laboratory facilities, and related work areas.
  • Performs routine repairs, maintenance, and updates to shop service equipment and assists with improvement projects, including organization, equipment installation, and workspace improvements.
  • Performs initial or routine diagnosis and repairs for the student service class within established procedures and refers complex or higher-level repairs to the Automotive Lab Coordinator.
  • Assists with identifying and correcting student repair errors and provides technical assistance within established procedures.
  • Delivers and picks up equipment, supplies, and materials from contracted vendors and supply facilities as needed.
  • Provides general information to students, faculty, staff, and visitors regarding Automotive Lab activities and directs questions or requests to the appropriate department or College resource.
  • Performs other duties as required by the Automotive Lab Coordinator or program chair.
Qualifications
  • Education
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience
    • Two years of automotive experience required.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in an automotive laboratory/shop environment using automotive shop equipment, chassis dynamo meters, automotive lifts, forklifts, cars, light-duty trucks, computer equipment and software, manufacturer scan tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Typically requires reaching, standing, walking, pushing, climbing, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
