The Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences (BTS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY is seeking an exceptional non-tenure track faculty member (teaching professor or professor of practice, open rank) whose area of teaching expertise is in animal physiology, pharmacology, and/or highly-related disciplines.

The CVM at Cornell is a top-ranked veterinary college and houses a world-renowned doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) curriculum. The BTS department within the CVM is a widely recognized unit with long-standing educational and research & discovery missions. On the educational side, BTS is deeply committed to excellence in teaching and mentoring at the pre-college, undergraduate, graduate, and professional (DVM) levels.

This position will be 90% teaching and 10% academic service (no clinical service). Education-related research activity is welcome and negotiable in the percent effort distribution, pending interest of the candidate. The successful candidate will be joining a rich community of outstanding and dedicated teaching professors in the department and across the entire college, with a commitment to educational excellence and pedagogical innovation.

The successful candidate will serve as course leader (CL) for Foundation Course III (Function & Dysfunction) in Cornell’s DVM curriculum, for which the primary focus is small and large animal veterinary physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. The pedagogical model for Foundation Course III is problem-based learning (PBL), which centrally involves learning course content through structured clinical cases and requires the participation of dozens of faculty from across the college.

They will be the main point person to manage and implement the course annually. The course leader plays a vital role in leading the course design group (CDG), comprised of 6-8 professors, to develop, revise, and run a highly effective course that serves the students’ needs and fulfills the educational mission. This includes leading regular meetings throughout the year, and delegating and accomplishing tasks across a wide range of course related issues, including course content, structure, assessments, student issues, case study updates, etc.

CL roles are typically for 5 years, and potentially renewable.

Other core responsibilities include PBL-based small group facilitation in Foundation Course IIIa (Spring semester) and/or IIIb (Fall semester), lecturing as needed in Foundation Course IIIa and/or IIIb, and coordinating with other foundation course leaders to streamline content and operations. The faculty member will also have opportunities to contribute teaching in other courses (DVM foundation or elective courses, pre-college summer courses, or undergraduate courses) and participate in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) for veterinary students as time permits and as relevant to expertise.

The faculty member is expected to liaise with the Chair of BTS on CDG needs, course finances, small group facilitator and lecturer staffing, and administrative support; liaise with the Assistant Dean of the Veterinary Curriculum and Associate Dean of Education on course content, small group facilitator and lecture training, and vertical integration across the curriculum; and serve on department, curriculum, advising, and a range of other college- and university-level committees that advance the academic goals of the department, college, and university.

The faculty member will be responsible for organizing training and mentoring for new small group facilitators and lecturers, will help create a strong and collaborative community especially among the teaching professors, and will participate in the semesterly teaching professor meetings with the Chair. They will also be expected to lead with belonging as a central area of focus, not only with regard to students, but faculty and staff as well.

The faculty member may also have opportunities to serve on department- and college-level committees intended to advance an inclusive climate.
