Under the general direction of the Vice President of Student Success & Engagement (SSE), the Coordinator of Disability Student Services (DSS) is responsible for promoting an accessible, inclusive, and equitable culture for students with disabilities.

The coordinator works closely with faculty, staff, and administrators of the college to ensure that students with disabilities are appropriately accommodated in all aspects of their college experience. The incumbent is responsible for the development of policies and procedures that address the needs and concerns of students with disabilities and ensure campus compliance to all applicable federal laws. He/she ensures legal compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, 2008 Amendments to the ADA, Sections 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other legislation pertinent to persons with disabilities.

The position functions as the primary institutional representative for ADA monitoring and compliance, and is also responsible for the development then coordination and day-to-day operations of Disability Student Services..

The Coordinator reviews documentation to identify the disability and determine the appropriate academic accommodations for new and returning students with disabilities each semester, incorporating problem solving strategies and referrals to other Baker College resources. The incumbent must be able to approach work that is data driven, scalable, strategic, proactive, and aligned with the College’s and SSE Team’s initiatives.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL:

• Oversee the direct service to students with physical, cognitive, psychological, psychiatric, and learning disabilities to determine eligibility for accommodations and the necessity and type of reasonable accommodations.
• Advocate for change that would remove barriers to students with disabilities.
• Provide appropriate referrals to college resources, including but not limited to Academic Advising, CARE Team, Career Services, and the Academic Resource Center.
• Maintain and manage a student information database and documents student participation, accommodations, and progress.
• Keep individual records of all student and family communication, decisions, and actions taken.
• Provide workshops to faculty and students on accessibility services. Contributes and assists with the development of resource materials and publications related to students with disabilities.
• Present at New Student Orientation and other student events to provide information about DSS to students and their families.
• Facilitate communication between students and faculty on academic accommodations needed by students with disabilities and promotes understanding/awareness of the needs and concerns of students with disabilities.
