Assistant Professor, Atmospheric Sciences

The Department of Physics, Atmospheric Sciences Program, at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking applications for a tenure track (9-month) Assistant Professor position with an expected hire date of July 1, 2027 or after.

We are seeking candidates with innovative research agendas that complement and expand our current atmospheric science initiatives. Competitive startup funds are available.

Example Research Specialties Include:

• Atmospheric instrumentation development.
• Cloud and aerosol microphysics, including wildland fire smoke and ash generation and propagation.
• Artificial Intelligence applications in mountain meteorology, weather forecasting, and fire science.
• Climate implications of water and energy use for powering AI.
• Mountain meteorology, especially downwind of the Sierra Nevada.
• Atmospheric Science education in the age of AI.
• Development and use of fast-physics for meteorological and climate models.
• Forensic meteorology.

Position Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research and academic advisement. Teaching responsibilities will include core courses such as Atmospheric Physics, Instrumentation, Dynamical Meteorology, and Radiation Transfer, with the possibility of teaching additional Physics courses.

There are also excellent opportunities to utilize and oversee established observational infrastructure, including a NASA AERONET sun photometer, a NASA MPLnet lidar, and multispectral photoacoustic instrumentation for measuring aerosol light scattering and absorption.

Required Qualifications
:
Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Physics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications
:

• Postdoctoral or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated ability to pursue external funding.
• Demonstrated commitment to student success via teaching and/or mentoring.

Department Information
:
Housed within the Department of Physics, the Atmospheric Sciences program offers both undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees, as well as an accelerated M.S. degree for advanced undergraduates. Established at UNR in 1965, the graduate program is jointly administered by campus faculty and the Division of Atmospheric Sciences at the nearby Desert Research Institute (DRI), offering rich opportunities for collaborative research. Strong alignment and engagement with the broader Physics program's students and faculty is highly valued.
