Position Overview
Under limited supervision, performs Waste Management job functions as assigned by management. Typical job responsibilities include assisting and supporting management in ensuring that the site Waste Management function operates in a manner that is safe, cost effective and fully compliant with FRNP Deactivation Project procedures and all regulatory requirements. The specific work assignment may include duties or activities that assist and support management in one or more of the following functional areas, in addition to other duties as assigned:
- Mastery in the requirements of assigned job duties supporting Waste Management functional areas such as waste characterization, waste stream certification, waste disposition planning, nuclear materials transfer, transportation and/or other related areas
- Waste Engineers must interact with Project Managers, Frontline Supervisors, Waste Specialists, RADCON, ES&H, QA, NDA, laborers, and other groups to ensure necessary resources and data is available to support characterization and packaging activities. Additional duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Work directly with each FRNP Project performing Remediation and D&D activities, to ensure all regulatory requirements for Waste Generation, Waste Packaging, Waste Characterization, Waste Transportation, and Waste Storage are being met. This includes assigning Waste Specialists as necessary to support waste preparation and packaging.
- Determine the most appropriate and lowest cost disposal path, waste packaging, and transportation mode. This includes providing the Projects with cost analyses as necessary for justification.
- Assist the Projects in developing Work Control and JHAs to include all necessary steps for proper characterization and packaging to ensure compliant storage and shipment. This also includes assisting with identification of chemical, physical, and radiological hazards associated with the work tasks.
- Develop Sampling and Analysis Plans with appropriate Data Quality Objectives and perform Data Assessments to assist with waste characterization, profiling, and verifying applicable waste acceptance criteria are met for the designated disposal path.
- Provide adequate documentation in accordance with applicable regulations to Transportation Personnel to support off-site shipments and complete Landfill Packages for waste destined to C-746-U Landfill.
- Research documentation and ensure compliance with the WAC for appropriate TSD facility.
- Provide projects with guidance on how to package complicated wastes such as fissile or asbestos contaminated in order to ensure DOT and WAC compliance.
- Support other Waste Management functions as necessary (Waste cost accruals, project waste estimates, provide reports and information to client as example but not limited to).
- Writing of procedure, technical documents and reports.
BS degree in a related field and 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Typical experience is 6+ years.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge of and experience characterizing and profiling Mixed Low‑Level, Low-Level (Radioactive and Hazardous), Universal waste
Knowledge of and experience with nuclear facility operations
Successful attainment of any advanced job‑specific required certification or training such as required for transportation

Good working knowledge of, and experience with, DOE nuclear facility safety including technical safety requirements, processes and reporting requirements
Attention to detail
Intermediate PC skills including Microsoft software
DOE 'L' or 'Q' clearance or ability to obtain a DOE 'L' or 'Q' clearance
