The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards associated with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing operations. This role serves as the site subject matter expert for industrial hygiene programs and provides technical leadership to identify, assess, and mitigate employee exposures to chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards.
The Industrial Hygienist will support a high‑hazard manufacturing environment involving battery cell handling, module and pack assembly, electrolyte‑containing systems, energy storage equipment, electrical testing, thermal processes, material handling, and maintenance operations. The position partners closely with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Occupational Health, and EHS teams to ensure regulatory compliance, implementation of best practices, and protection of employee health.
ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership & Regulatory Compliance
- Serve as the site’s Industrial Hygiene Subject Matter Expert, providing technical guidance to leadership, operations, and engineering teams.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve site IH programs to ensure full compliance with OSHA, state, local, and corporate occupational health requirements.
- Lead IH training programs, support Management of Change reviews, and participate in internal audits, regulatory inspections, and incident investigations.
Exposure Assessment & Risk Monitoring
- Design and execute qualitative and quantitative exposure monitoring plans (personal and area sampling) for physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards.
- Evaluate and mitigate specialized risks including battery dusts/materials, solvents/VOCs, electrolyte constituents, thermal emissions, noise, lasers, and radiation.
- Maintain the site IH database, analyze exposure trends, and translate complex technical data into clear, actionable reports and dashboards for leadership.
Hazard Control & Engineering Collaboration
- Investigate potential over exposures and collaborate with Engineering and Operations to design, validate, and optimize engineering controls (local exhaust ventilation, dust collection, process enclosure).
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to systematically reduce workplace risks.
- Manage third‑party IH consultants and analytical laboratories, including defining project scopes, reviewing proposals, and overseeing budgets.
Chemical Safety & Medical Surveillance
- Oversee the chemical approval process, maintain exposure inventories, review Safety Data Sheets, and lead the Hazard Communication program.
- Partner with occupational health providers to support medical surveillance programs (respiratory protection, audiometric testing, heat stress, and return‑to‑work evaluations).
